Hiya! I've been working on Henry's birthday movie since before his birthday and  finally had some time to finish it up this evening (You can't have a video for one and not the other…you know what I mean.) Henry turned the big "5" last Thursday. His birthday was such a fun one. He wanted to spend the day at Disneyland so we went down in the early afternoon, had lunch at the restaurant of his choice and then spent the day together as a family. There were churros, a lego store visit, blowing out of candles, presents & ice cream. The Charlie Brown music seemed like the perfect song for Henry. He picked it out as my ring tone on my cell phone about a year ago and I've kept it ever since.

5 is seeming so big. So much older than 4. We are savoring these last few months of him being home with me/us all day before school starts in September. He's such a sweetie pie and so excited for school. He got a new Star Wars thermos for his birthday that he'll be able to take to school as well as a new lunch bag.

Henry is sweet and energetic and has a wonderful imagination. He is all about Star Wars. He spends hours every day playing with his little figurines. We gave him this book for his birthday and he pours over every single page before bedtime. He loves Charlie Brown and always seems to get a good chuckle when he watches it. For the record- "You're a good man, Charlie Brown" is one of his favorites (it is pretty hilarious.)  He is growing like a weed- 98% for height & weight and almost growing out of his 6T's. Gosh- there is so much to say, but mostly, I'm just in love with him. Madly.

Speaking of books, I think he is old enough to have us start reading chapter books and wanted to see if you had any suggestions on good books for his age. I hope you'll join me in wishing Henry a Happy Birthday.

See you soon!

xoxo

Happy Birthday Henry! Henry sounds a lot like my 5 year old (a LOT!) and the chapter books we’ve started reading to him are the Magic Tree House books (he loves!) and he really likes the Berenstain Bears chapter books (“Big Chapter Books” they’re called) like the Galloping Ghost and the Maniac Mansion. He asked one night if he could please, please, please find out what happened in the Galloping Ghost as SOON as he woke up?! (Um…. YES!!)
We’re about to start the “Three Tales of My Father’s Dragon” series, which was a gift.
    Five is so fun!

Magic Tree House, Indian in the Cupboard (there is some controversy regarding portrayal of Native Americans in this book but my son loved it), Mercy Watson books by Kate DiCamillo.
    Enjoy!

We’ve been into chapter books for two or three months now, and Kathryn and Vivian LOVE them. We’ve done Charlotte’s Web (they were forewarned about Charlotte dying because they had already seen the movie, so if Charlie doesn’t know, you might want to think about giving him a heads up…), The Trumpet of the Swan, Stuart Little (all three are by E.B. White) and now we are thoroughly into the Magic Tree House books. The girls LOVE those books.

Also reading Magic Tree house, Junie B jones (i’m NOT a fan), and classic stuff, Heidi, Charlie and the Choc Factory, etcetera. let me know what else you find! i am a huge fan of the used book store and have been loading up for summer!

Oh my! Little Henry! I still remember the Christmas we spent with you guys when we were both pregnant with our firsts! That means that Henry being five, means MINE is almost five – oh no! Where did the time go? Isn’t it weird that five really does seem SO much older than four? He’s adorable and I loved your video for him.
BTW, we are in Lauren & Jeff Stephens’ ward – they said they knew you in Boston. Fun small world!

    Happy Birthday, Henry!
I (along with everyone else, apparently) recommend the Magic Tree House series. The chapters are perfect lengths, the stories are imaginative, and the topics vary enough to keep the kids interested. Ethan also loved The Mouse and the Motorcycle.

I can’t believe no one mentioned the Mercy Watson Series by Kate DiCamillo. It is hands down the best beginner chapter book series I have ever seen. There are color pictures on almost every page and the stories are hilarious. The language is not dumbed down to make it easy for the kids and I have honestly never seen a kid that didn’t like them. http://paisleypatchwork.blogspot.com/2009/11/books-for-boys.html
