IMG_3376 View from my labor & delivery room

I wasn't planning on sharing the birth story of baby Charlie but Grace said she always loves a good birth story and well, I just adore Grace so bear with me. I was due around Friday, November 20th and well, the day came and went and no baby. I had to be induced with both Henry & Kate because they were so late and an induction was scheduled for Charlie a week after my due date. I started having contractions the Monday before he was born. Nothing consistent, but contractions. They continued on Tuesday and were in full swing by Tuesday night. I had contractions through the night (nothing that kept me up much) and by morning they were a steady 5 minutes apart. They told me to come in when they were 5 minutes apart for an hour. I didn't want to risk being sent home, so I waited until it had been 4 hours with them 5 minutes apart. We headed up to UCLA hospital around 12:30, parked, got checked in, etc.,. They checked me about an hour later and I was only dilated to a blasted 2. I couldn't believe it. We were sent walking. So I changed out of my hospital gown and back into my clothes. They weren't sending me home, but wanted me to walk around Westwood for 2 hours. So we walked, contractions still coming but this mama was hungry. I hadn't eaten all day. We stopped at BJ's for lunch. I had  a wedge salad (my fav) and a cobb sandwich. We walked back up to the hospital. IMG_3374 But it hadn't quite been 2 hours yet and I wanted to get some more walking in. So I this is where I walked. Around these fountains. I made the loop around this courtyard for what felt like dozens of times and when the 2 hour mark hit- we went back up. The contractions were stronger and harder now. I was checked again. It was 4 o'clock now.  This time, I was a dilated to a 4. They were letting me stay. Back into the gown and into the labor & delivery room (see picture on top.) The deliveries with Henry & Kate were so short. Within a few hours of being induced (2-4) they were born. The labor with Charlie was by far the longest and the hardest of the 3. I opted for an epidural around 6 or 7. It kind of worked- well not really. Just for a short time. They decided to break my water at 9:15 p.m.  and told me they'd come back & check me in 2 hours. I knew there was no way it would take that long. The pain was intense (as I imagine all un-medicated labors are) and it felt like the contractions were right on top of each other. I was feeling pressure. They came in to check . "During the next contraction why don't you try to give us one push and we'll see what your body does" so the contraction came and I pushed once.

"STOP PUSHING" yells one of the nurses

"I"M NOT PUSHING ANYMORE" I yell back.

"He's coming…the baby is coming!" I tell them.

They are not ready. The doctor is not gowned-up, no gloves, totally unprepared to catch the baby. The nurse reaches down to HOLD THE BABY IN. I'm thinking- 'you've got to be kidding me! I've been working all day to get this baby out and you are HOLDING HIM IN??? Are you insane??' Chris almost reached down to catch him. The  Dr. frantically throws her gown and gloves on and barely catches him in time. It was exhausting. IMG_3425 Chris started making the calls that Charlie had arrived. I overheard him say, "yeah, he just shot out like a cannonball!" Oh really? Geez, sounds so, I don't know.. SIMPLE and EASY and um, EFFORTLESS. Sheesh!

But little Charlie is here and we love him so much. He is an absolute dream. I am ready for another!

Is’t it strange after all that you give birth to such a blessing and you can say I want to do it again! Love it:) I also was induced in with six births and the last two were c-sections. I rather be induced:) He is such a cutie enjoy him as you know he will grow sooo fast!

Oh, I just have the chills! I love birth stories too 🙂 I am surprised they thought not to check for 2 hours after they broke your water. Esp. with a third baby they can come really quickly after that. Such beauty!

Great birthing story and I laughed at your husband thinking “he shot out like a cannonball”. Maybe at the end but getting there was a battle! I was induced with mine too. Not a party by any stretch of the imagination but it is effective. I’m so glad Charlie arrived healthy and you are both doing well. You are such a fantastic Mom!

I love birth stories… it’s probably the labor & delivery nurse in me. I love that you stopped for a wedge salad while waiting in labor. That’s awesome. And don’t you just love the way men describe birth? If they only knew! Babies are so tricky; they each have their own way of arriving and guessing what they are going to do is so hard. I had a 15+ hour labor with Libby, so planned for at least 6 with Reeve… waited at home with steady contractions for 2 hours, then arrived at the hospital just in time– fully dilated! No epidural, no doctor, no nothin’! And I can’t believe you just said you are ready for another. The supermom crown is officially yours (as if it weren’t already!)

I can’t believe she told you to stop — oh gosh–
way to go- people with kids as cute as yours should have loads of them to brighten up the gene pool. 🙂

My husband told people that our second “came rip racing out like he was on a harley”.
    Yeah- classic!
At least your hubby had a better choice of descriptive words.

I, too, love birth stories. Something about them makes me just remember how awesome mamas are and how we are all part of a sisterhood of sorts. 🙂 My sweet Charlotte was born in June, my second, and I said right away that I was ready for another, too. The rush of labor and delivery is unlike any other. Enjoy your sweet blessings.

Morgan, what the! That is quite the birth story. Thanks for sharing. It is funny how dads and moms tend to see the birth experience from different points of view. And the non-working epidural is not-so-fun. You are a trooper to have pulled that one off. And ready for number four already?…Wowzers, you are a pioneer. Get some rest sister! 🙂

Love it. My 2nd & 3rd came out like that but my 4th almost killed me. I was expecting her to just fall out like the others did but I almost died (literally). I think the fact that she was 11 lbs had something to do with it but who knows. Maybe my next one won’t be so hard, here’s hoping!! xoxox

Beautiful baby! Glad you had a relatively easy experience. I think it’s great that you walked and ate. Eating in early labor is very important. It’s detrimental – and goes against medical evidence – to restrict laboring women from eating.
I agree with Jane, babies come when they’re ready. Most women do not “have to be induced” when they are 41 weeks unless there is a medical problem – post-dates is AFTER 42 completed weeks.
One other note – the pain of labor after a failed epidural is NOT the same as an unmedicated labor. It’s WORSE. Once you introduce narcotics into your system, you interrupt your body’s natural pain relief mechanism (endorphins) that’s active in a normal labor. So if the epidural doesn’t work completely, or wears off, you will feel ALL the pain of labor, without the benefit of endorphins, probably made worse by the fear and anxiety you are feeling since you’re unprepared to deal with that pain. Considering how fast and easy your labors are, you could probably go unmedicated next time (if there is a next time, of course!) quite easily.
