Apples of the littlest variety

IMG_3306Crab apples. They are so small. I spotted them at the market and had to get a dozen. I love miniature things (i.e., cake stands, individual s&p shakers, etc.,)  and thought they'd be perfect dipped in caramel. Like a bite-sized caramel apple. Yum. So today we dipped. By we, I mean I. I don't think I've ever eaten a crab apple. I hope they are delicious. IMG_3314 We have some Thanksgiving projects on the agenda. Any good ideas for kids? Henry asked to make these again (and holy cow-look how little Ms. Kate has grown!) How about a turkey hat? Will they think I am racist against turkeys? I do like to eat them on Thanksgiving (I thought that whole thread was so lame by the way)

    I was pretty shocked to see what people wrote. I loved the idea and thought it was so fun and a great for kids. Now I’m off to find me a brown shirt to make some turkey’s!

    I logged out and then decided to comment so logged back into your sight. I live in Santa Fe New Mexico. I am anglo and have several ‘native american’ friends… none of whom would of taken offense at your ‘teepee’ party. By the way… TEEPEE is a white man’s word… originally TP stood for Trading Post. Some people just have to grouch about something to feel superior. But… the old saying goes… you can’t please all of the people all of the time! Your party was adorable.

    I keep popping over to your blog hoping for some baby news (not that I don’t love seeing all your projects)!
    I read through that whole thread and it just made me mad. I hope it didn’t upset you…I would have been crushed. People can be such jerks. Tell your mom I thought her defense of you was extremely loyal, extremely sweet, and extremely eloquent.

    Love Henry’s little hands.
    I didn’t wash Miss Kate’s foot prints off my kitchen floor until a couple weeks after you left.
    I dipped those mini apples we got at TJ’s and handed them out to the parents of my trick-or-treaters. Loved ’em!!

    Morgan: For the past 3 years, we send out “feathers” (construction paper) to family all over the world with a return envelope. We ask that people write what they are thankful for and if the feeling hits them…decorate it. My kids love getting mail, reading the feathers and hanging them on the turkey shape we make out of brown paper.

    Ugh – that thread! Seriously? Racist because you made teepees? Didn’t Native American’s live in them? The ONLY thing I could see being “racist” at all is if you had had a big Cowboys and Indians party with guns and battles — that may perpetuate a stereotype, but really? Just having Indians on top of your cake dressed in traditional attire? That perpetuates them as barbaric warriors? Someone get to the tribal council and let them know because I’m pretty dang sure they still use their traditional costumes in ceremonies and celebrations. Because they LIKE them. Because their costuming and elaborate headdresses are beautiful and represent their link to the earth and their appreciation for it. Are we not allowed now to portray Native Americans dressed as they did hundreds of years ago, joining in a celebratory meal of peace with the Pilgrims …. also dressed in their traditional attire of the time? Ughhhhh. Don’t you worry, I was SO on your side on this one. Obviously I’m ranting. Sorry. I thought your teepee party was adorable.

    Our crab apples are even smaller, but taste as sour as lemons. India likes them.
    Don’t get me started on the mono-culture we call the US, where we aren’t allowed to even celebrate our differences.

    I just wanted to tell you I made one of the turkey shirts and it is SO ADORABLE, and I appreciate SO much that you shared how to do it. I went on to use the same technique to make a jack-o-lantern shirt for Halloween and am going to try some Christmas gifts too. Thank you very, very much, and all best wishes to you.

    So glad you linked back to the cute little turkey shirts. I remembered them from last year and was going to search back through your blog to find your tutorial. Perfect timing!
    The comments on the party were ridiculous. It was the cutest party and Henry loved it, so that’s all that matters, right? My high school mascot was an Indian, so I’ve been hearing these PC comments for a long time. Our high school slogan was “Pride in Excellence.” (Don’t you see we’re trying to honor the Indian traditions, and we liked what you stand for so much we decided to take that on as a symbol of “pride” and “excellence”???) You just can’t please everyone, I’ve learned. So carry on. We know you’re awesome and kind-hearted, and for every nerd out there with a negative comment there’s a million more people who love what you do and who you are.

    A couple things:
    I got some crab apples last week and I wish I had thought to dip them in caramel, that is the cutest!
    Second, that thread was so ridiculous. If it makes you feel better my bookcases were were featured once in an AT post. I had them filled with all my white & cream books, and that post generated 48 comments of bookcase hate (okay, there were a few positives, but mostly it was negative). Really? I can’t believe people would take the time to critisize someone they don’t know. I don’t have that kind of time, personally.
    I’ve always wanted a yurt, does that make me rasict against Mongolians?

    The comments thread didn’t upset me at all- mostly because I feel like everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I’m not going to criticize someone’s opinion (even it I completely disagree) None of those commenters know me and if they did they wouldn’t have commented the way they did. There was no ignorance on my part regarding the party- I’d do it all exactly the same again if given the chance!

    Crab apples, so small, so fun. mmmm. Love the picts! We just discovered the carmel bits sold in bags. Sure beats peeling of the filmy plastic Kraft wrappers when we were kids.

    I love those little apples- so cute! Be sure to update as to the taste. As for the thread, I just had something on Ohdeedoh and there was only one comment and it was negative. Lots of positive comments came to my blog. Maybe because it is so big and impersonal people think that they can say whatever pops in their head. I don’t know. Loved the party! Not the party poopers. LOL
