IMG_2754 Mama & Kate, Malibu Beach, Sept 2009

Hi there, blogland. Long time, no chat. These past few months, and weeks especially have been really hard. I've been feeling myself slipping into a bit of depression (read: lots of crying and general despair) that has left me not wanting to be in this space, or any space really. But I need to, it will be good for me, so I am back.
For now at least. Plus I finished the quilt and have no one to share it with. Wanna see?
IMG_2863 The children were out in the courtyard earlier today enjoying some popcorn (an all time favorite snack) on the quilt. So I used all fabrics from my scrap bag and cut them into 2 1/2" widths (the length varied on each strip.) I heard of a technique once (I swear I am not making this up) where you throw all the scraps into a bag and sew whatever pieces you pull out together. So I did just that. I cheated only a few times when I pulled the same fabric pattern out twice, and had to throw it back in and grab a different piece.IMG_2868 A couple of patterns ended up being sewn close together, but overall, I'm really happy with how it turned out. The only piece I had that was big enough to cover the back of the quilt was this red & white polka dot that I picked up at a thrift shop last time I was in Utah:IMG_2870 The batting is pretty light-weight, so this makes a perfect blanket that we'll probably keep in the car for last minute trips to the beach and park. Everything made to use this blanket I had in my stash with the exception of the binding- which is Amy Butler (I think the pattern is Belle?) that I went and purchased because I loved the pattern so much. IMG_2871 I really wanted to hand-sew the binding on this one, which I did. It only took a few nights to finish and c'mon how about those corners. Good, no? The quilt didn't end up being the size of Texas, but did end up being just slightly smaller than a twin size, which I think will be perfect. I love it. IMG_2866 They love it, too!

LOVE it. You are so talented, Morgan. The end of pregnancy can be so hard–and the beginning, and the middle too. 🙂 Keep your chin up, you can do it. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, either. I wish you the best, and especially a peaceful, calm heart and mind.

I think I read that is a Denyse Schmidt thing, with the pulling the scraps out of a big bag and just using what you get – what an amazing job you did! And yes, your corners are lovely! Hang in there and glad you’re back!

Pineapple juice is a natural anti-depressant. Start drinking it like crazy (and eating pineapple too). Or you can just go the route I’m taking right now and take an anti-depressant. I just had too much in the last little while to make it on my own. 🙂
    Much love!

How can Kate be a ‘kid’ and not a baby anymore? I’m shockerood by that. And Henry looks so adorable. Well they both do. Sorry you’re blue.. sometimes they come, the blues that is. It will pass. Love the quilt. Its happy. And you have healthy kids, that look happy too. xo

I have quilted and I sew and I have sooo many scraps of all different colors and patterns and I never thought that a scrap quilt could look so good. I always thought no way, these scraps will never look good together but then I read your post and saw your quilt and I just love how you did it. No obsessing or stressing and it came out beautiful. I am going to give that a try at some point. Great job.

What a happy quilt. Those are the best kind, of course. I heard of this technique too, but most of the time it doesn’t seem “random” enough for me.
I had bad depression around months 7-9 in both my pregnancies..I think it’s the euphoria of being pregnant is gone and you still have a long time to go. This too shall pass….I’ll pray for you.
    PS Yay for comments!!!

wow it looks great! i always intend to do a scrappy type project and when i sit down to do it i find myself being anal and wanting to make it all matchy matchy, but you may have inspired me to just go for it. i read that denyse schmidt puts on a class where they do the “blind grab” technique.

I was starting to get worried about you. I so love your blog but understand when you need a break. I love your quilt and have been tempted to order your grab bag and make my own. Is the grab bag enough to make a quilt the size you made?
Take care and know you have tons of us out here supporting you and sending great thoughts your way…just as you do for us.

Your quilt is so cute. I can’t believe you will let it touch the ground. If I could ever make something that looked like that I’d probably be too scared to let it touch the ground. You really are amazing. I hope things get better and better. You deserve good things.

When we were growing up my grandparents had a number of scrap quilts along the lines of this, they are to this day my favorite quilts. One of the quilts they had is made mostly of scraps from old dresses of my grandmothers, I love it and thinking of my grandma in all of her lovely dresses every time I see it. By the looks of it your kids love this one too, what a great heritage piece it will be for them someday! Love your blog, hope you’re hanging in there okay!

I have to tell you- I was a little nervous sewing some of the strips together- especially since at the time they looked like there was no way it could ever turn out- but it did and I’m so happy with it- you really should give it a try- maybe on something smaller like a baby quilt or pillow?

Thanks so much, Alexis. The quilt scrap bags would probably make a quilt about 1/2 this size. It’s meant to be used in conjunction with fabric from your own stash! Hope this helps!

Super cute quilt. You always make the best things! I’ve only made one quilt in my whole life and it was just a bunch of squares sewn together that only ended up being a crib size. I don’t have enough patience to use a pattern, but am thinking about making another “scrap” quilt again! I’m thinking 5″ squares, is that going to take me forever?? Thanks for the inspiration!

You’ve inspired me to make one of these. I have a lot of fabric that I’ve been tempted to get rid of because I’m not using it. This would be the perfect project for some of it. Or even lots of it. I really need to make quilts for the 4 children of cousins, plus larger quilts for my own grandkids. I could get into this! I’ve done the grab it out of a bag without looking thing before and I love it. I even tried to teach it once at a shop I worked at. I was surprised at how many people signed up who just could not do it! They missed so much fun by being too matchy matchy.
Stay happy. You’re great fun to visit.
