Did you know (I know you didn't) that Henry never once ate an ounce of baby food? He couldn't stand the texture, and you can't entirely blame him for that. He went straight for table foods at about 10 months. So this baby food business (and bibs for that matter) are totally new to me. And I'm excited about it. I have 2 baby food mills that I've had for almost 4 years that I am finally getting a chance to use. Kate turned 6 months old last Friday and I've started making her homemade baby food. I made a sweet potato sprinkled with cinnamon and 1 sweet potato filled up an entire ice-cube tray which lasted us a week. Each cube is about 1 oz, I think, and she eats 2 a day. I've tried pea's and carrots but neither of those gave me the smooth, creamy texture that the sweet potato did and were a bit of a chore to feed. So I'm still experimenting. My girlfriend, Jean gave me this brilliant spoon called the Boon Spoon. Actually I think it's called Squirt. Whatever. Just get yourself one. It's fantastic.

Happy 6 months Kate!

You are:

17 lbs and 26" long, almost sitting on your own and all laughy-laughy. We love it. And you.

One of the best perks of having a girl:

Tights
Oilily tights. The best.

Ezra ate peas a bit later in life. But still mashed. I never did get a food mill. That’s probably pretty handy.

    Morgan,
I used a baby food grinder for Chris and Scott, they certainly liked it better than pre-made baby food.
Kate is so cute and bubbly in her sweet dress, and pinafore. The leggins are sooo cute.
Thanks for the new pictures to put up at work.

Save a little of the cooking water to thin the carrots and peas. It’s not smooth like potatoes, but my kiddos gobbled them up!
    (p.s. she’s beautiful.)

i agree- save some of the water and add it to the peas/etc. if it gets too watery, you can add some rice cereal to it when you serve (ie. heat up the cubes, then just add a little bit to thicken it). this is what my sis does and it works great. her kid also loves squash and zuchinni.

I want to take little Kate and put her in my pocket! Nora wants to eat her for lunch 🙂 She looks so sweet and yummy!
I also want that spoon. Why do I hear about cool things like this so late! I think that I am going to get one, even though Nora is starting to feed herself.

Soo Cute!!! I had such a hard time with getting our food to a good texture, pears were hard too unless I cooked them down for a long time. Peas were better when they were cooked Less, and carrots cooked longer as well as the pears. We also hated meat and I can’t even push something that smelled like dogfood.. I can’t even stand behind it and just pushed iron and protine in other things.. ewww.. Good luck with the food. I ended up cutting a lot of it with broth (veggie for veggies) and apple juice in fruits.. 😀

oh I almost forgot.. we got a recipe for roasted Banana’s and they were AMAZING… Henry would love them over ice cream as well and they are so easy, you just put the whople banana in the oven at 350 for about 15 minutes take them out, let them cool a little and mix them up. I have it on my 2nd blog (zoososilly.blogspot.com)
    yum!!

I borrowed one of those mills with Helen and I loved it. When I had Arthur I tried to find one and we could only find an electric one and it didn’t work nearly as well. That spoon is so cool. To bad Cedric is a bit too old for it, he is getting good at gumming stuff so pretty much he just gets little bits of the food that we are eating.

HA! Your Mom’s comment cracks me up. Sounds just like my mom…
We’re just gearing up for the baby food mushing frenzy here. So far we’ve only done cereals, but boy-oh-boy does this babe like to EAT! Let me know if you ever find a good solution to the glumpy peas– we’ve always struggled with that as well.
Miss Kate is adorable! Makes me wish I had another girl to dress up. (Did I just admit that outloud?)

I have that same baby food mill and I LOVE it. My baby doesn’t do pureed stuff anymore, so it sits in my cupboard ’til another family member has a baby.
And the designer of the Boon Spoon used to be my visiting teaching companion. She is incredibly talented and has some very cool products.

homemade baby food is totally the way to go! i used a food processor though. . . maybe i’m lazy??? anyway, i could make a bunch and then freeze it. i would NEVER in a million years eat gerber baby food, but found myself snacking on my son’s food. a bite for him a bite for me. ; )
