IMG_1445 Someone around here has been working way too many hours but was finally granted a day off today. We went down to Disneyland for a few hours and I have to say, today's little outing made me seriously re-think my decision not to get a double stroller.  I don't want a double stroller. I've never wanted another stroller. I don't have any room in my life for another stroller. I love the one I have.  But carrying Kate around in the sling for 5 hours, with the molten lava sun beating down on me has left me wondering if  I can in fact make room in my life for another stroller. Have one you like? Let me know.
IMG_1452 "Hey Chris, let me go in front of you so I can get some pictures of you and Henry"  Just prior to take off,  a Disneyland employee who we'll call "Paula A. from San Diego via Auschwitz" immediately gets on the loud speaker:
"Please remain seated and forward facing."
Yeah yeah. "Hey Henry, look at Mama so I can take your picture"
We take off, I turn to take pictures.
"You are going to be the first person thrown off of Dumbo!" yells Chris.
"What?? Going. too. fast. can't. hear. Smile for the camera!"
Another muffled announcement from Paula.
Our ride slows down and then stops. All Dumbo are grounded. Hmm, that's funny. I don't remember the ride ending this way.
"Please remain seated" I hear someone (who sounds oddly like Paula A) say over the loud speaker.
"Look what you did!" yell some hecklers from a yellow Dumbo behind me.
And then rounding the corner,  it's Paula. She's coming. Straight for me. I'm so embarrassed. Not really.
Apparently Kate, who is snugly sleeping in her sling on my lap, is allegedly at risk of pulling a Dumbo herself by 'flying off the ride' because the seat belt is just over me and not strapped up over my chest/around her. So I make the necessary adjustments while all the other riders just stare. And point.
"You really shouldn't be turning around taking pictures!" she says with a huff before turning and leaving.
Our ride is resumed. I secretly turn and take the above shot.
Lucky for you. You get to see Paula A. She's on the top right. She's the one with the white hair and the  um….brown pony tail. Weird.

I am not usually a rule-breaker.  Who  do rule-breakers think they are anyway? Thinking they are above the LAW. Something  about Disneyland brings out the rule breaker in  me. The parking for instance. Don't make me park 10 miles away from the  tram, because you know what, after I've walked 10 miles around the park, I'm too tired to walk 10 miles to my car. So whenever they 'direct'  us to our parking spot, I tell  Chris to wait  until  the parking attendant leaves, back up and find a spot closer to the front. Because guess what, there is always a spot  closer to the front. Chris hates when I do this. I do it every time we go to Disneyland. Once, while doing this, I noticed the car next to me, followed me up to the front to a closer parking space. Upon exiting his car, I hear the big, burly man yell, "What are they gonna do?? Throw me in Mickey Jail!!!" Exactly.
IMG_1441
This is the baby center at Disneyland. That place is great. Rocking chairs, private areas for nursing, changing tables, an area to warm up food/bottles, etc.,. I was standing there today, changing Kate and couldn't help but notice the gigantic…toilet just to the right of me. I couldn't figure it out. I mean you'd have to be quite large to fit on that thing (and have a square bum.) So I asked. "Oh it's called a Hopper. It what they used back in the day when people had cloth diapers. They'd rinse them out in there." Oh really, back in the day… "I use cloth diapers!" I said. "But I use a service, so I can't rinse them out here." I've never wanted to rinse out something so badly in my life.
IMG_1473
It was Kate's first time to Disneyland, so we got her the token mouse ears. She seemed kind of annoyed with the strap, but I know she'll thank us one day. And oh, it was the perfect excuse to whip out the sunglasses. No 3 month old should go without.

Hi There! Kate is getting so grown up! Loretta is too, its sad and good at the same time. Re the double stroller, you dont need to get a side by side or a one in front of the other stroller as there are now ones with a baby area below the toddler area OR get a regular stroller with a buggyboard on the back? if you have no idea what Im on about (maybe this is a UK thing) let me know and I will search the net for you!
I went to disneyland when I was 14 (wrong age to go)and they sold AMAZING cinnamon jelly balls/beans in a big perspex cube I have never forgotten their lovliness 🙂

Your top picture reminds me of a story. A few years ago when we went to Disneyland my six year old pointed to that statue and said. “Look, it’s Joseph Smith and Mickey Mouse!”
    It was too funny.

That sounds like a fun day! I use a quasi-double stroller, the Joovy. It’s awesome. It has a rear facing seat on the back for an older kid, and also space to stand if they so choose. The main seat has a 5-point harness, which can be unstrapped when Kate gets older and only needs a seat belt. Check them out, they come in great colors. I have had mine for nearly 2 years nowa and still love it.

I can’t believe it…we were there yesterday, too! It was the perfect day for Disneyland, I figured, since it was the first day of school around here. It was so empty and fun…we’ve been missing it this summer. Didn’t make it on Dumbo…and yes, I’ve done the ‘pictures from the elephant in front’ thing! (Didn’t get Paula A. on my back, though.) Yesterday I spent a little time photographing and then blogging about the beautiful little spots all over the park…they do such a nice job keeping everything perfect. That baby room has the perfect little boy sized toilet for stopping by on the way home, too.

I HAD to tell you about this for Henry. The Orange Empire Railway is hosting “A Day Out With Thomas” in Perris, CA. Go here (http://www.oerm.org/) to get the details. We live in OK, and we’re taking our two Thomas fans to OKC to ride Thomas. I know Henry would LOVE it. And it isn’t too far from LA for you guys! I hope you get to go. He’ll never forget it.

i have parking stories from disneyland too! We got confronted by the attendants, they smiled and told us to please move our car. my dad who is not shy forcefully said no, a small verbal discussion followed and we never moved the cars. Nothing like the strict happy faces of disney employees to make you want to shake things up a bit 🙂

We could not live without our double stroller – we love it! It’s a Graco DuoGlider – like these ones: http://www.albeebaby.com/graco-double-strollers.html. We got it at BabiesRUs just before Vivian was born. The back seat can lay down flat for a sleeping baby. It’s great. Now that we have a three-year-old, and two-year-old and a five-month-old (and, ahem, another one on the way…yes, I know, we are totally insane), a triple stroller is seeming like a good idea… Maybe we’ll need two double strollers?

super cute, wish we lived closer, I would walk the 10 miles. My cousin and I each got double strollers from our local craigs list. No need to pay full price and honestly the older ones are lighter and fold up smaller…
this one is in orlando area and it’s one where they can face forward or eachother and keep eachother occupied (which is sometimes very cute!)

Phil and Teds! A thousand times over, the Phil and Teds! This stroller has a seat for a toddler that snaps on the back or on the front while baby sleeps underneath. I LOVE it, and it handles with all of the grace and ease of those Bob strollers. Its a bit big and a bit heavy, but probably no more than these monster doubles i see…

I love Disneyland. My kids play pretend DL at home all the time. Sadly that will have to do for them as we have committed ourselves to not going back until their baby sister (who is two weeks old) can “walk and talk’. Which also gives us time to pay off debt and save up for the trip.
Now. Double strollers. I have the Baby Trend Sit n Stand. That thing is brilliant. It’s compact and because my kids are super skinny both my older ones can sit next to each other on the little bench (yeah yeah, probably not the safest idea) and the baby’s carseat clips to the front till she’s old enough to sit up. The only downside is that it isn’t a good nap stroller, but the pluses way outweigh that negative IMO. There are two versions of it, one about $100 and the other 250 or so. I have the 100 one and my friend the expensive one an dthe only difference we see is the fabric is snazzier on hers.
And there’s my dissertation on strollers!

    A few comments here…
    1. Went to Disney World in 2002 and it seemed to bring out A LOT of the rebel in me! Most memorable altercation with the staff was when I tried to slow down my boat on It’s A Small World so I could get a better pic of my daughter who was in the boat behind me with my friend and she could take a pic of our boat (her daughters were with me). They got cameras everywhere! lol
    2. I was four months preggers on said trip and Autumn got her ears then, even though she was just a belly bump. EVERYONE gets Mickey ears at DW/DL! lol
    3. Why am I checking out all the recommendations for double strollers? Mine are almost 6 and 17.. and there are NO more on the way! Can you tell it’s a Friday afternoon and I’m already checked out at work? lol
    Thanks for another great post.

True story, which I’m sure we’ve told you…Jason broke the rules at Disneyland during high school, and got in trouble (possiby by Paula A; she looks like she’s been around a while). And on Honor’s Night, no less. He was not sitting correctly on a ride (Magic Mountain?) and got taken off, escorted through a series of underground tunnels, and had his picture taken while standing on Donald Duck feet (I’m not making this up).
You may want to think twice before you take your rule-breaking tendencies back to the happiest place on earth. I’m just sayin’.
I have 2 SILs who swear by the Phil & Ted’s, but I just can’t get on board with it. That bottom seat makes me claustrophobic just looking at it. I have issues. I have the Graco double and I HATE it. Don’t take it anywhere (we make Ethan walk). But at Disneyland that probably wouldn’t be an option.

i miss disneyland. what a fun day.
we have a double stroller, which i rarely use. but it will admit that occasionally it comes in very handy. it’s actually our second one, since the first one was stolen at disneyland, of all places. since then, we always just rent theirs. not cheap, but better than having a $250 double jogging stroller stolen when it has all your kids warm clothes in it and the keys to your car. ugh. not our best moment at that happiest place on earth, i must say.

I cracked up over this. And of course am driven to commenting on the hopper. Back in the day wasn’t that far back, I did that with FRankie’s daipers and she’s turning 21 in Nov. Man I am old if you don’t remember that whole flushing while dipping the diaper into the oncoming flood of water. HOW OLD IS YOUR MOM??? I’m not older than her too am I?
But yeah, if the daipers weren’t dipped then you were penalized with my service. Wow YOU KIDS THESE DAYS.

I had 3 babies in diapers at once … yes, Morgan was one of them …
OK …. so, I’m 55 and am not too old to remember dipping diapers …
AND THEN washing them in a wringer washer and hanging them to dry on the clotheline. Oh, yeah, and that was in between nursing twins and baking bread and sewing clothes for 4 children.
Ok, well, that lasted not too awfully long after I threatened your Dad one day on his way out the door to work not to come home without a washer and dryer.
That was all right before the nervous breakdown. :>

I have a Phil & Ted’s. I LOVE IT! My daughter Katie sits in the back and falls asleep all the time so it must be comfy! It goes on all terrain. Great for the mall and bus where you can’t get a double stroller into. When your son is too big for it you can take the back off and have a single stroller again. I like the smaller width of it. I couldn’t be caught dead with a gigantic double wide!

In regards to double strollers. I have 2 kids nearly 3 years apart and had the same problem of not wanting yet another stroller. I finally caved and got a sit and stand, which I didn’t really care for. They are really hard to steer up hills or over driveway dips. I guess because they are so long. I mostly used it for walks in our neighborhood. It was also very bulky to get in the car. Then someone gave me a double side-by-side jogging stroller. The kind that real runners use (not me). But, it was so much nicer to push than the sit and stand. The downsides being there is not much storage space and thought it is very light weight, it was a real pain to fold it up and get it in the car. You have to detach a few things and fold it up backwards. But, if I was going to be at the zoo all day, or an amusement park, it was worth it. And since you live in LA, like I do, I’ll let you know that I saw one of these exact double joggers in the thrift store I frequent this morning. It was still in really good shape, dark green color, but I didn’t catch the price. You will also find the sit and stand that I donated there a few weeks, for like $15, I think. Though it is dusty and faded from sitting on our porch for a few years. If you are interested, the store is the American Way on the corner of Magnolia and California in Burbank. ANd I think on Sat mornings, everything is 30% off.
A friend also has the double Phil and Ted and loves it, though they are expensive, but I think very easy to push and easier to get into doorways. I am happy to say that I am down to just 2 strollers now after having 5 at one point! Whew! Way more than you wanted to know! Good luck!

I have a 3 1/2 yr old and 6 month old currently…and was determined to not buy a double stroller. We have a Bugaboo which I’m in love with and sentimental about:) so we got the toddler board. It’s worked great….for us. And when we’ve done longer days out, the older switches with the baby when he’s tired of standing and then I use my Ergo for the babe.

When we go to Disney Land or the like (any place with mobs of people looking to get their hands on an expensive storller for free)we just rent the double at the park. For every day use we have the Joovy Caboose stroller. No too pricey and very compact for a sit and stand. Plus it makes a fabulous cart to carry all of the luggage you normally have to shlep around at the airport. Good luck – sorry it’s had to come to this – I’m a stroller minimilist as well. http://www.joovy.com/pages/pd_caboose.php

You are so brave to do Disneyland. I think that I am allergic to theme parks. I seriously about break out in hives just thinking about the lines, germs, heat, and annoying people…not to mention dealing with tired kids. You are a good mom! I know what you mean about the sling. I had Garrett in one yesterday, for an hour, and it about broke my shoulder. He is already to heavy. What a bummer!

Love the Paula A. story. I need to do something with my hair and may have to take a tip from her! As for double strollers we have the Maclaren Twin Techno and I love it. It folds compactly and fits through doors easily even though it is a side-by-side. I felt like the front and back double strollers were like driving a bus! Evan seems comfortable in it even though he is almost 4. I bought mine on ebay for about half of the retail price. Love the pics of the kids, including Chris on Dumbo! Kate is adorable especially with the shades! When will you be in SLC next?

I have a front to back stroller – totally KNEW it was the one I wanted – only to find out that unless you own a pickup truck (I did, thank goodness), that you were not going to be transporting that sucker anywhere.
So, I bought the Jeep, and used it FOREVER!!! I might still use it if we go to the state fair this year (ages 5 & 6)

I did get a double jogger, but rarely use it. The most valuable stroller I have is the PegPrego one that is a single with a step on the back for child #1. Good luck.
