Kate is one of those babies that I had always read about but was quite certain never really existed. I had heard it from friends and never really believed them. They were just boasting, right? But now I am a believer. This baby sleeps. All. The.Time. Put a baby down, who is wide awake, and they'll go to sleep on their own? Without making a peep? Fughettabout it. She started sleeping through the night at about 7 weeks (I know you want to start throwing darts at me. Go ahead.) I was baffled by all this so-called sleep as a certain 3 year old still isn't sleeping through the night. But she sleeps all day, too. She usually is only awake for about 4-5 hours in a 24 hour time period. It's crazy. I just don't know what to do with myself. Not really.

When she was born, she didn't look much like Henry but as she grows they are starting to look a lot more alike. He had those funny eye-brows. He always looked so concerned. Not much really to report, she's a chunky little monkey- so big that she is off the charts for her weight. And she's starting to coo and laugh a little. And of course, lots of smiles:

So people have been asking how I like the gDiapers. Here's the dealio: I liked the gDiapers but Kate outgrew them at about 6 weeks. I was at a crossroad when deciding if I should buy all the stuff for the next size up or go in a different direction all together. I decided to go in a different direction and I'll tell you why. Because the gDiapers are biodegradable/flushable they aren't as thick/absorbent as the average diaper so you are going through them more frequently. Plus, they are about $15 for a pack of 40 inserts and I needed a lot more than that per week. I also found myself constantly washing out the outer cover and hanging to dry. One day, while doing that, I thought, 'If I am going to be washing them out- I should just do cloth.' Not so fast quick draw McGraw. There is the  whole poop factor (a.k.a. PF) That is the reason I have never wanted to do cloth in the first place. And Chris was so not convinced. I didn't want to be rinsing/washing out diapers because any parent can tell you that smell takes nothing short of nuclear power to get off. Plus, the even bigger reason is we don't have a washer & dryer. It costs us $2.00 every time we do a load.

IMG_1221 In the end, I decided to go with cloth and to use a diaper service (thus alleviating the PF.)  I have to say,  I've been using them for just under 6 weeks and have been really, really happy.  The first week they  brought 80 diapers, a  lined  diaper pail (which looks like a white garbage can) and some diaper covers that I ordered.  Every  time I change her diaper, I just  toss it in the pail. No rinsing, no washing. So that part of it  has the convenience of  disposables.  The little deodorizer  inside smells really good actually and every time I open the pail, it's all I smell.  "Wait until you've got a weeks of diapers in there!" he  says. I'm telling you a week later,  still smelling good. Every Tuesday night, I pull out the liner of  diapers and  set it on our doorstep. Wednesday morning when I wake up, I have a  fresh new bag of about 80 diapers. "Kind of like the East Bunny" says Henry. Exactly.

IMG_1217 So I 've been using the cloth  with these  yellow things called "Snappi's" which replace the need for pins. There's alot of  different options out there for  covers,  I ordered the  Prorap  covers  because it's what the diaper service had and  I could get them delivered with my diapers.

IMG_1232 They are a  bit big because they are for 13-25lb babies and Kate was just barely 13 lbs when I got these.  One thing you have to get used to with cloth is the bulk, but it doesn't bother me so much anymore. The covers feel a bit… generic…hospital grade.. I can't think of the right word but she hasn't had any leaking or blow-outs. They are working great, but I might keep looking around to see what else is out there. Some of the biggest things that I love about the cloth is that they are so soft and I can change her as often as I want- it doesn't cost me anything more. So many times I'd put a new diaper on Henry and 2 seconds later he'd need to be changed again and it always felt like such a waste.  So I change her often which I don't mind at all. Anyway the diaper service is $20 a week, and that's for LA, it may be cheaper in your area. I've found there are some pretty die hard cloth diaper-er's (??) out there, alot of  talk…well  our delivery truck says it best:

IMG_1073 "Would you wear paper underwear?" Such a crack-up. I'm embroidering that on a pillow. I will have to  say that  it does feel great that in her 3 months of  life she hasn't created additional waste in landfills, that there aren't hundreds of her stinky old diapers floating around out there.  I have to admit, after using cloth, it does feel wierd  to put a disposable on her (which I  have had to do a  handful of times) Oh no, I am turning into a die-hard!

I wish we had a diaper service here! There used to be one, but unfortunately, Tulsa is not nearly eco-friendly enough…ahem…we do supply a lot of oil and natural gas. 🙂 I’m doing cloth, but primarily using Bum Genius on my 2 yr old. I plan on doing prefolds with covers with our new baby in November. She’ll move up to the bumgenius when she outgrows the prefolds. I love the Bum Genius diapers. They’re easy…except with toddler poo. I hate toddler poo. It is getting better, but that part is still so icky to me. Newborn breastfed poo doesn’t bother me, neither does grown-up kid poo (like my 3 yr old), but that in-b/w stage makes cloth diapering a pain. Thankfully, she doesn’t do that too often…every other day or so…why am I still talking about this?

I don’t have a diaper service here, that would be great! I’m glad that you’re finding cloth so good 🙂

Just found your blog recently and I really enjoy it! I also started on cloth with my 2 boys this year (BumGenius). It rocks, but I also do the switch up with disposables sometimes depending on where we are going.

Kate is adorable–and you are so lucky that she’s such a great sleeper. Anders was never a good sleeper and is just now starting to sleep through the night at 3 years, and the baby wakes up 2x a night! But, I’m happy for you. No, really, I am, I swear!

My goodness, she’s PERFECT! I’ve been wondering what your take on the gDiapers is, so I’m glad you made a post about it. It’s got me thinking about what we’ll end up using for baby #3 due in March. Thanks for all the info!

I also had diaper service for the first 2 months – it was great. And I also tried 2 of the Prowraps, but I did not like them at all (didn’t seem breathable enough). Now I’m still CDing, but washing every other day (we have a washer and dryer in our new place). Since the beginning I had used the gdiaper covers, but never with their disposable liners. I fold the cloth dipe and slide it into the snap in liner, just like the disposable. And I love cloth for all of the reasons you noted, so much so that the PF is no big thing!
BTW – my son slept like that at 3 and 4 months, too. Then he started teething and all that sleeping business went out the window sigh.
I’ve got my fingers crossed for you, though…

i’ve had two babies who didn’t sleep and two babies who did. and the difference is amazing. it is so much easier to enjoy motherhood during that newborn stage when your baby (and you) get some sleep. i’m so glad that kate is one of those!
i remember my mom used diaper service with a couple of my younger brothers. i’ll have to look into it with my next baby. bronwen’s starting to potty train, so it’s probably too late for her (and i don’t believe in pull-ups).

Thanks for the diaper news. I was going to tell you that I would totally buy pillow covers from your Etsy Shop. I love the fabric you have. You’ve got great taste.

Could it really be that Kate is already 3 mo!? It seems as though she was just brand new – glad she’s a good sleeper for you 🙂 That makes creating easier!

When my boys were in diapers (about a million years ago) we had a diaper service and used cloth diapers. I would put a biodegradable sheet of something (paper??) in the diaper and if they pooped I would just toss the paper and poop in the toilet and flush it and then toss the diapers in the pail.
I loved when the diaper man would arrive each week with freshly washed diapers.

That’s cool that you use the cloth diapers, I hated them when I was young and a babysitter and I really haven’t thought of them as an option for my kids. I really should though, I don’t even know if there is a diaper service here. I should check into it, there is no way I could wash them myself, I gag easily.

how nice to have a sleeper, probobly due to her rapid growth? my fourth was a major sleeper and grew the fastest. he is 4 and weighs 2lbs. less than my 6yr. old daughter. she however was 18lbs. at her first birthday. they are all so different. i also had diaper service with my first and loved using cloth diapers. we eventually went to disposible for church because nobody in the nursery new how to put them on right and we would end up with a mess. i did transition to washing my own diapers eventually. just keep the same pail for dirty diapers like for the service and for poopy diapers what drops out of the diaper into the toilet is all you need to get rid of. no need to rinse. if you do a load every night (when you get a machine) and add distilled vinigar to the wash with your laundry soap you get fabulously clean and stink free diapers without any toilet rinsing fuss. have fun it is over before you know it.

I’m SO glad Kate is a good sleeper! You deserve it. Kids are such a lottery– you never know what you’re going to get. Does Kate want to come over and talk to my belly and tell our little gal how great it is to be a good sleeper and to sleep through the night so early???

My favorite cover ever was this one! http://www.cottonbabies.com/product_info.php?cPath=36&products_id=958
It was softest one that I ever tried (pretty sure that i tried them all.) The PUL “plastic feeling stuff” is sandwiched between two layers of scrumptiously soft knit. And the leg gussets are awesome for, you know, keeping stuff in that you don’t want coming out! There is an organic version too!

This is all too sweet to believe…by the time we have a baby, I will just call you and find out what cloth diapering system works the best and not have to do the trial and error of all the different types of cloth diapers out there. Man, she’s as sweet as candy….I got cavities now!

What a great green girl! I have been lamenting not going green in terms of diapers, but this choice has motivated me to potty train Grant earlier. I just wash the PF out of his white training underwear in the toilet. It isn’t fun, but this has made me a more motivated potty-trainer. The wettness you speak of, I am told by other mom’s, makes it uncomfortable and supposedly invokes the desire for your child to potty train earlier. With such an easy baby, you are sure to find such success!

Hey Morgan, I too used the G Diapers for a while, and had the same experience. Garrett was too big for them after only a month and a half, and the covers are a bit pricey. Now I have a half a box of unused inserts and the cover that I need to donate. If anyone wants them, let me know. Anyways, they were too big of a pain for the sitters, or the grandma to deal with, so they always ended up using disposable anyways. As for the whole cloth thing…yikes! I don’t know if I have it in me. I have heard that the water that it takes to launder the cloth can be an issue, making it a wash as far as effects on the environment (I probably heard this from some right-wing nut who hates trees and resents anyone who recycles 🙂 Anyways, way to go on being green! Your girl looks darling, and I am envious that she is such a sleeper. Lucky you!!

What a beauty! Love the pictures.
If I had it to do over I would totally go diaper service for all my kidlets. So much easier and so much less mess/hassle/smell.
If we end up having any more I will probably look into it.
