Yesterday my girlfriend Heidi & I took the kids to this great place out in Pasadena called "Kidspace." I'd only recently heard about it and have to say it was very cool. There was lots to climb on, gigantic leaves to watercolor, dark tunnels to run in, giant tents to see the stars in and there was even a little 'earthquake' corner which an 'educator' so anxiously wanted to show Henry. It probably would have been a lot cooler for a 3 year old who had not been recently traumatized by a certain earthquake that hit Southern California last week. 'I'll have none of that thankyouverymuch' as he slowly backed away from said 'educator'.

There were two walls covered in these tiles made by kids. I thought it looked so cool. I would love to do something like this one day when we have a house of our own. It would be so great in a playroom. Have you ever done this? Do you just paint on tiles? What kind of paint do you use? Do you seal it with something?

One of my favorite rooms where you could play with rocks/minerals, pine-cones, etc,. What? What's that you say? There are planets here???

Amazing! I think I might just need a closer look with my magnifying glass…

Ah yes, planets! My favorite. I have killer space/planet mobile planned for Henrys room that I'm going to try to make this weekend. It's going to rock his world.

So if you live in So. Cal. Go. Your kids will love it and I guarantee you'll think it's pretty  swell,  too.

This place looks like it could entertain the kiddos for hours. I have to say that you were my saving grace last week, wow what you do without even knowing. Your links to kids crafts saved me and will continue to for many days ahead of trying to keep the boys busy. I knew there had to be something or someone out there that was on my same wavelength and was being more creative than myself. You are a fantastic multi-tasker, taking care of your kids and mine. Well done and a HUGE Thanks!!!

you were wondering about the tiles; i have done this before. go to a ‘paint your own pottery’ place-like Color Me Mine. they have different sizes of unfinished tiles that you paint using low-fire ceramic glaze. you leave them there and they fire them and they come out looking vibrant and glossy. it’s really fun actually, and they have other stuff to paint besides tiles.

Very cool. My friend used to paint tiles all the time for coasters. She would buy acrylic paints. She would buy tiles at a hardware store like Home Depot that were plain, not slick. After painting them, she sprayed something on them…I don’t remember what it was, but it was an aerosol that would set the acrylic. You had to let it sit for 30 minutes or so after spraying it.

What a fun place! I think that parents have more fun at these things then the kids do! I want to go tomorrow 🙂

Loving Henry’s hair. I know it’s far off, but we’ll be in town around Thanksgiving. Hopefully we’ll get to visit you all.

That place looks great! I wish I could take my kids there. I love Henry’s hair. I want to grow my boys hair out, but Reed always ends up giving them a buzz cut.

I have done some “artist in residence” programs at schools where I teach the kids to paint tiles, then they install them as murals in their schools.
It’s great fun, and the kids have a good time.
I use underglaze to paint the colors on, then glaze it with a clear gloss glaze and fire them….just like the Paint Your Own Pottery places, but I have my own kiln so I can just fire them myself.
I would suggest checking with a nearby college to see if they will fire your ceramics for a nominal fee.
