2 months old today. Sometimes I can recall nearly every moment, other times it feels like it’s flown by. We are settling in. I’m not as terrified to take them both out as I thought I would be. We’ve been lucky to have house-guest’s on and off for the last two months so it’s given us a lot to look forward to and the opportunity to mix-up our daily routines a little. Actually, don’t be fooled, we have no routines. Aside from eating and sleeping and the occasional bath it’s pretty much chaos. Henry loves her and is pretty much borderline smothering:

“I think she’s crying because she’s so happy!” he says.  It’s no surprise that I’ve struggled with her name from day one when Chris took advantage of a still drugged-up post-partum woman and co-hearsed her into signing birth documents (he doesn’t read this blog). About a week after she was born, I said to Chris, “I don’t think I can live with the name Margot.” And I kept remembering all you bloggers posting stories of people you’d known who changed their babies names. I didn’t have to live with it for the rest of my life if I didn’t like it. However, there were (2) very distinct moments where I realized we were absolutely not keeping the name Margot. A woman by the name of Margot, who lives in England, posted a comment on the blog:

“Hi, i am a Margot (now 36) and i have to admit this name has been a
real hassle. In high school I went by Margaux and i really wish i’d had
the spelling legally changed then. I’m not crazy about the sound of
Mar-go no matter how you spell it, but more people are felled by that
silent T than you can imagine. There are some people i’ve know for
years who still call me “Mar-goat.”
I’ve seen elsewhere people saying it can also be turned into “maggot.”
I only got a slight bit of that but it’s still not too nice!
My only advice is tweak the name to Margaux!! or change it.”

It was great to hear perspective from a real-life Margot (I personally never knew any Margot’s.) In her few short weeks of life we had already run into mis-pronunciations, mis-spellings, yaddy ya.

Secondly, there was a gal from church named Margot Martin and from the pulpit, she was mistakenly referred to as MANGO MARTEEN. I. almost. died. Mango? Are you serious?? I looked at Chris, “Did you just hear that????” Margot was officially out.

But what were our alternatives? We couldn’t agree on anything. I was so sick of looking at our baby name list. I decided to toss it and start completely over. The weeks wore on and I just hated not having a name for her. People would ask- we looked like totally lame parents. “Ugh- we don’t know…” I called the State to find out what the process was to get a name changed. “Why do you want to change it?” they asked. “First, what’s it to you and second, I don’t want my child to be called Mango for the rest of her life. Ya heard?” So  it’s $20 and I have to fill out a form. Easy peasy. Oh and a pesky court order. Whatever that means.

“Chris, what do you think about the name Kate?”
“I could do Kate” he says.
“Let’s do Kate”
“Kate it is”

Kate Ryan Moore

Henry calls her “Kate Margot Maggie” and that works, too. I’d never known any Kate’s growing up until just recently, and now I know 2 and they are pretty cool cats.  Kate’s kind of a peppy name, totally not turn of the century like we  were gunning for, but I think it goes okay with Henry and gosh, she’s completely grown into the name. Art Garfunkel hair and all.

I don’t know how I found your blog…but I did and I’m glad. I had to comment because the name KATE has been my favorit girls name for my entire life. If I ever have a Girl (I don’t think I ever will), I will name her Kate. I just love it. She looks more like a Kate than a Margot! Good job. It’s classic!

Glancing at your comments…it’s funny how once you change a name the real opinions come out. As you know I totally love the name Kate. And might as well name what you’re going to call them. That’s my philosophy (although plenty of people ask if Drew and Kate is their full name. I say yes, and offer no other explanation). You won’t even remember the minor hassel of the name change.

I did the same with my daughter. We had called her Amy, my seventh child, with twins 23 mo. I was a little confused at the time. A lot confused!!! After I got to know her for a while, we decided she definitely was not an Amy. We thought she look more like a Jamie, and thus she became Jamie Diane.

I love the name kate…she looks like a kate. We just adopted a baby boy and if we hadn’t already had the name picked out like 10 years ago i am not sure what we would have named him. It is hard to pick a name that they are going to have for eternity

I love the name Kate! I had considered that name for Lily, however then I realized that Kate Jones was one of Syndey Bristo’s aliases on Alias, so I couldn’t consider it in all seriousness. It was her “code name” in utero. She’s getting big!

Kate is beautiful! Love the name, too. My neighbor is Margot, a common name in Ireland, so if she ever comes to Ireland…

Thank you for stopping by my blog and i love this story!!!
I totally understand… for our first daughter we couldn’t agree on any name! so much so that on a road trip to texas from CA, i didn’t speak to my husband for one whole day because he wouldn’t compromise!!! Then, she was born and we didn’t really even have any options, but after she came out we said, “How about True?” Because she was our “true” miracle (long story short we aren’t supposed to be able to have kids naturally, but by some miracle now we have 2). So we debated with True and then finally made it official 15 minutes before leaving the hospital, so she is True Bella Bratcher.
Oh boy… now with our second, the story only got worse! couldn’t agree or find one that we came home without naming her!!! Oh the difficuly everyone gave us… but 5 days later we decided. See we saw children’s book called Ruby Lu, Brave and True, and well we had a true, my name is ruby, so we though about brave… but it was so edgy we wanted to soften it, so hence we named her Brave Noëlle Bratcher. There’s nothing like a french name to soften an edgy first name!
so when people ask us there names, we love to say it, “They are Brave and True.” We get a lot of looks and a lot of excuse me’s, but we love it and I guess that is all that matters. Plus they really look like Brave and True!!!
So i understnad the name problem, but Kate Ryan Moore is a lovely name!!!

    Hi there
I came across your blog off some other foodie blog and I bookmarked it. Your daughter is beautiful. I think she looks like a Kate and I could tell you didn’t care for her name and I wouldn’t have settled either on a name that didn’t fit.
    Congrats!

I am so glad to hear that you had the courage to change her name to a name you love. I three years later wish I would have had the courage to change my daughters name. I have learn to live with it but still at times wish I would of changed it when I intially brought her home. Many say i should just call her by her middle name but others who have been only know by their middle names say that is incredibly confusing once in school and as an adult.
So I guess I say again to you bravo for your courage and decision.

We’ve been wanting to change my daughter’s last name. I wonder if it’s as easy as changing a first name? Do you know? Who did you call and where did you get the paperwork? I’ve heard horror stories of it taking years and hundreds of dollars so I’m just curious if you’ve done something easier. Thanks!!
