IMG_0929 and not in a way that is going to profit me oodles of money from television sales. Sometimes, okay a lot of the time, I just don’t know when to stop. Today, the trifle was the latest victim. All along I had planned on making a chocolate brownie trifle. Super delicious, basically layers of brownie, whipped cream and cherry/raspberry pie filling. That’s what I was aiming for. Chris went out last night and I asked if he could stop at the store on the way home to pick up some whipping cream and pie filling for the trifle. “Sure, sure I’ll call you.” He never called. Why hasn’t he called? He doesn’t know what I need. Then he comes walking in the door around 12:30 a.m. “Why didn’t you answer the phone, I called you like 14 times?” he says. “Huh? The phone never rang.” Further investigation showed that the phone did in fact ring. It was behind closed doors where the babe’s were sleeping.  And now, I have a bag of fruit. Fruit? Blueberries, raspberries…completely wrong for the choco-trifle. He tried, I can’t blame him for that. “Last thing I heard you say was trifle” he says. Famous last words. So now what do I do? I already made up a pan of brownies (in the best brownie pan evah.) There wasn’t time to make a pound cake or angel food cake for a fruit trifle.  So I do the unthinkable. And it goes a little somethin’ like this:
Whip up the cream and spread 1/3 of it on the bottom of your trifle pan. Throw some brownies on top.
IMG_0910 Next, spread 1/2 package worth of chocolate instant pudding on top. Place sliced banana’s around edge.
IMG_0915 Then, place strawberries around the edge, spread next 1/3 of whipped cream on and then add strawberry jam (this s where I fear things may have gone disastrously wrong.)
IMG_0917 Next, the rest of the pudding on that and brownies on top.
IMG_0921 On top of that, place strawberries along the outside, banana’s in the middle, some blueberries, raspberries and because all of that isn’t enough…chocolate shavings on top.

You lost me, no I lost me, at blueberries and strawberry jam. How horribly wrong is that paired with CHOCOLATE? Banana’s? Sure. Raspberries? Sure. Strawberries? Sure. Everything else? Not so sure. I may as well have thrown in a ham hock while I was at it.

I’ll be entering the party through the back door. If anyone see’s me, I’ll blame Chris.

p.s Did you hear that Ina Garten has a new cookbook coming out? October 28, 2008. Huh-rah! Pre-order from Amazon. Isn’t she such a cutie pie. I just love her.

Marrying into a Scottish Family I’ve learned a little bit about Trifle in the last 5 years, but my mother-in-law uses jello and cool whip. Yours visually looks good, and I’m sure will taste fine. If I had those ingredients I would have skipped the chocolate pudding and the strawberry jam, and just done whipped cream, brownie and the fresh fruit. But I’m sure you’ll be fine. Everything else is always amazing.

You are so funny. All you need is some ground beef (or that ham hock) to have replicated one of my favorite episodes of Friends. Brownie? Good. Strawberry jam? Good. Whipped cream? Gooooood.
I think it’s beautiful and looks delish!

I’m with Kimberly. I’m laughing thinking of that episode of Friends where Rachel makes the trifle and misreads the recipe and adds ground beef. Ross said, “It’s tastes like feet!” and Joey was all, “I can’t get enough! This is the best trifle-thing ever!”

I tried it and surprisingly, it wasn’t bad. Dare I say, it was good. But the bite I had didn’t have blueberries or jam.

Truly, can anything with chocolate and fruit and whipped cream in it be bad? I think not. Even with blueberries, I think it looks divine and probably tastes better.

I am with Jules and Kimberly. When I THINK of trifle, all I remember is Joey Tribiani saying, “Jam, Good. Lady Fingers, good, Cream, good. Beef, with peas and onions, good. Any chance you would give the beef, peas, and onions even a try? I cannot even tell you the torture I have to relive when David reminds me the frugal concoctions I made in college. This is entirely edible and of course so beautiful.

    Hi Morgan-
I just discovered your blog tonight and LOVE it! I was born in England and grew up here in the US…LOVE me some trifle! Your trifle actually sounds good to me, I may have skipped the strawberry jam…but whatever, blame it on the post pregnancy brain!
By the way, KATE is the best name! When I hit your flickr page I thought Kate and Henry James, fabulous!
I’ll be checking in on your blog often. You’ve had me laughing and crying in the last 10 minutes! Love it. Oh and I think we’re neighbors…I’m in the L.A area too!
    Cheers!
