Img_9864Hi there. Long time no chat.  I’m really starting to slow down. 5 more weeks. I’m swollen beyond belief. Henry said, "Mama, your feet look like ‘Lil smokies."  I’m actually not counting down, because well, we are not really prepared. Stuff still needs to be bought, and  um, a name would be helpful. I am really at a loss for names. I have one that I like, Chris has one he likes and neither of us like each others much. That’s as far as we’ve gotten. Lame. I know how hard recovery and newborns and lack of sleep are, so five more weeks is fine by me. Plus, I really don’t mind being pregnant.  We thought it would probably be wise to schedule a hospital tour since we have never been there and had no idea where to go. It went well and really got me thinking, "Wow- we are having a baby. Soon. Cripes." Time to start thinking about it.

So how much do I LOVE this fabric?? LOVE LOVE LOVE. I picked it up in the fashion/fabric district a few weeks ago and just love it so much. It’s like already a quilt. It’s like the cheaters quilt. All the work has already been done for you. I’ve just been staring at it, thinking about what I want to do with it. Debated on using it for Henry’s bed but ultimately decided I didn’t want all the florals and have decided that it’s going to be a play quilt for the kidlets (that feels so weird to say, by the way.) It’s about a yard & 1/2 square. I’m thinking about doing a creme colored border about 5"-6" wide around the whole thing and finishing it off with some polky-dot binding. The colors are just fabulous. I’m loving that white patch with the red and blue and yellow dots in the left hand corner.
Img_9869 On the agenda for this weekend, however, is a quilt for Henry’s bed. I bought this Japanese fabric a few months ago and have just been going back and forth on whether or not I want to use it for his bed. I love the turquoise, red and browns. I’m thinking I’m going to do a standard patchwork quilt and just use maybe 10-12 squares of this stuff and mix in a bunch of other fabrics. This is what I was thinking:
Img_9866 The bottom fabric is looking black in the picture, but it’s really a chocolately brown. I’m thinking a lot of creme squares, with punches of color randomly thrown about. Are polka-dot’s too girly? Do I need to be looking for more striped fabric? I actually don’t want to buy anything- I just want to use what I’ve already got in my stash. I want to keep the red because it goes so well with the mushrooms but maybe a different turquoise. This was not one of the original ones I liked, but can’t seem to find the one I wanted.
The stuff here is a little darker than the ‘schrooms but maybe it could work. Be honest. Is the Japanese fabric too girly? I just don’t know. Henry could care less (I’m so lucky to still be at that stage with him.) Plus, the color scheme that I want to use in his room is going to be red, orange and turquoise. So it would kind of go, right?  Hmmm……I like it. Maybe I should just go for it and stop talking. One other question for you experienced quilters: the creme fabric is broadcloth. Is that going to work okay? Nothing has been pre-washed because I want it to get all shrinky and worn looking after it’s all been put together. Will I still get that same effect with the broadcloth? All you long time listeners, I want you to become first time callers and share your ancient Chinese secrets! Am I insane to think that I am going to be able to complete this entire thing this weekend? I’m planning on listening/watching conference and quilting to my little hearts content (and hoping Chris doesn’t come home from work at 6:30 a.m  like he did this morning. Good gravy.)
Img_9635 So I know you think all I do is sit around making chocolately treats, but I have got to share with you this cool little brownie pan my brother gave us when we were in Utah in February. It’s a brownie pan meant for the person who likes brownie edges, the theory being that every piece has at least 2 edges. Now regarding my preference for brownies with or without edges, I’ve got to say- I don’t have a preference. Just give me the bloody brownie. But what is so cool about this pan is that it’s non-stick (my least favorite part about making brownies is getting that first dreadful piece out which always leaves the brownie sitch looking disastrous- at least for me that is) and it comes with it’s own little spatula. It’s so easy to get uniform looking pieces and they just slide out so easily.  Very cool and brownies turned out super delish (thank you master chef, Chris.) You can find out all the deets here.

So, although I haven’t been a star blog poster as of late does not mean that fun times haven’t been had by all. We (Chris, Me & Henry) went to the Red Sox vs Dodgers exhibition game at the Coliseum last Saturday. It was cah-razy. Over 115,000 people. The most ever at a baseball game in the US. Downfall: um you want me to pay $60 to park my car? For reals?? And speaking of baseball, I’ve been meaning to share the coolest thing we got for my brother for his birthday last December. One of these. Did you even know that ages ago baseballs used to be made from lemon peels? It’s really cool. The quality and craftsmanship are amazing. Get one for the baseball lover in your life. My sister was in town with her boyfriend for about a week and it was so good to see and spend time with them. What else? While sewing on Thursday, I managed to sew through my finger. The bigger miracle (aside from my finger not falling off) is that I was able to keep myself from swearing like a sailor because a certain Henry James Moore was sitting right next to me. Instead, I just belted out a "BALLS!!!" (my favorite I-can’t-really-swear-in-front-of-a-3-year-old curse word.) Phew. That was close.

Happy Weekend!

xoxo

I have two of those pans and I LOVE them! (Two people gifted me the same present for my birthday one year – my love of brownie edges had preceded me!)
I use it for everything…it’s great because it cooks so evenly. I use it for lasagna, coffee cake, banana bread, cake, scalloped potatoes…but definitely most often for brownies!! Yours look very yummy by the way!

OK, as a two-boy mommy, can I say that the fabric is NOT too girly. They’re just little boys, it’s not like you’re trying to put them into a teenager’s room, you know? I think it will look amazing put together.
And for what it’s worth, I’ve got dots all over the boys’ room.

I love that tree fabric but honestly, I think it could be construed as a little girly, long term. I think it could be fine too, I would just be careful how I cut it so all those branches look like trees instead of flowers.

Oh my word, honestly how totally genius is that pan? I love the edges personally. I would have never thought!

We’re strictly edges and corners brownie eaters around here. To get the center part done, the edges would have to be terribly overcooked, so the gooey center never gets eaten.
I recently saw that brownie pan in a Solutions catalogue, and if not for the price, I’d have ordered it on the spot. I told Hubby I needed to really ‘know’ it worked that good before I shelled out the bucks. I’m so glad to know. Thanks!

I think the fabric is really nice and very neutral. I don’t think the dots are girly at all and a good way to make it more boyish. I’d probably only use the turquoise in small bits since it is such a strong color.
As for the broadcloth–you need to be careful with different fabric weights, especially if you aren’t preshrinking. It would be awful to make the whole quilt and then have those squares shrink too much and distort the top. Do a test with a scrap of the broadcloth and one of the other fabrics–cut them the same size and then wash and dry them. If they shrink the same amount, it’s fine to use. 🙂
The brownie pan–what a great idea! I love brownie edges!
Do some thinking on little one’s name–my guy arrived 2 weeks early (not quite a month ago) and we didn’t settle on his name until just about to check out of the hospital.

All cute cute cute. Is the broadcloth 100%cotton? If it is, it should shrink up like everything else. If not, thinks could get funky. Cute idea, love the shroomy fabric. And you! 5 weeks! whoo hoo!

So glad to know that I’m not the only one who has sewn through a finger. My Sam was sitting next to me as well…I was a bit dramatic, but no swearing. 🙂 I love all the fabrics. Do whatever you want while Henry isn’t arguing about it! 🙂

i am like you at the end of the pregnancy; i may be tired and swollen, but i know that i’ll be more tired and swollen when the baby comes!:) as long as i know that the baby is well, i’m happy for them to stay in there for quite some time. they are so much easier to take care of in utero. the great thing is that when they are born, you finally get to meet them!
good luck with the baby name. we’ve named two babies at the hospital and agreed on the names of the other two ahead of time. just don’t be one of those couples who doesn’t name their baby for a month!
love the fabric, the brownie pan, and the new quilt look for henry’s room. good luck getting it done!

WOW! First let me say that I lOVE the “cheater” quilt fabric…but I am even more in love with the little collection of Fabrics you chose to make the other quilt with! I have been re decoration my daughters room and have a mental picture of the colors I want to use but have had a hard time putting the colors to fabrics. Perfect combonation of colors and prints you have there…I thinkI’m inspired 🙂

I thought you already had a baby name picked out years ago when you were preggers with Mr. Henry? One where your sister had a dream about you with a little girl by that name? I think I remember it, but don’t want to spill the beans if it’s a favorite and you’re keeping it a secret. Anyway, it was a good name.
And I LOVE the brownie pan! So do my in-laws (here visiting) so it may come in as a handy Mother’s Day or Father’s Day gift!
    Love the fabrics!

Oh Melanie- that is such a crack up re: the name. So the story goes: 10 years ago Chris & I got married, about 2 months later we were camping at the beach with my entire extended family and I got really sick and started puking. Everyone thought I was pregnant and I was terrified that I just might be. My sister had a dream that same night that I was pregnant with a baby girl that we later named Olivia. For the following 6 years, the question was always, “When is baby Olivia coming” “How long are you going to make baby Oliva wait??” LOL! While I do think the name is adorable (we actually tossed around the name Olive for a few months) it doesn’t look like we are going that route this time around. I can’t believe you remembered that Melanie! Hilarious.

I love the fabrics! The “cheater” fabric is awesome, and no, I don’t think polka dots are too girly at all. I think they will be great for Henry!
I can totally commiserate with the naming dilemmas. The last thing we did before leaving the hospital with Libby was write her name on the birth certificate. We were still throwing out names the day after she was born. I’m terrified to ever have another girl because I think we put all of our agreement on names in one basket. Other than Libby, Brian and I TOTALLY don’t agree on names. Oh well. I figure if I can give birth to a bowling ball-sized kid, I can have the final say on names. =)
I hope in all your quilting frenzies you get time to put your feet up and enjoy these last few weeks of single-kid-hood. I remember being so tired at the end of pregnancy and not being able to wait for that little baby to pop out…. If only I had known how hard it was to have a newborn! I’m sure you are exhausted, but at least you are exhausted without a newborn who needs constant feeding, diapering, attention, etc. Good thing those little kidlets are so worth it! Good luck!!!

I love the fabrics for the quilt. And the brownie pan, well now I know what I’m getting my mom for Christmas! I have three girls, Sadie, Ella, and Maisy; anyway, I love their names. If Jack had been a girl he would have been Brynn.
But I have to tell you, I sewed through my finger about six weeks ago. It actually didn’t hurt until my husband pulled it out. Then he shared the story at church and I had many horrified men asking to see it. Just my little badge of courage. Hope yours heals well.
