Img_9585_3A few posts ago I had talked about working on some new things for my little shop. I’ve been toying with the idea of selling appliques/iron-on’s for a while and was finally able to work on some this week. The thing that I’ve been debating is selling just the applique or the whole kit and caboodle. I’m leaning towards just the applique’s. I mean there’s a gazillion people on etsy who sell them on onesies, etc.,. so if that’s what you really wanted, you could find it there.  Plus, I just don’t have the time and I think people tend to feel more empowered when they can do it themselves. I know, it’s just ironing it on, but still, it’s your own little creation and you get to say you made it! By just selling the applique,  it allows you to iron it on to anything you wanted. You wouldn’t be limited to a piece of clothing. You could iron it to a book bag, or….whatever. I’m drawing a blank here people.
Img_9579 I’ve come up with 6 girl and 6 boy designs. I’m thinking of selling them in a kit where you would get all 6 (of either gender) or if you wanted to buy the girl and boy ones, there’d be a separate kit for that.
Img_9589 The ones that I made were applique’d to onesies (for the upcoming arrival of the wee one) and t-shirts for Sir Henry. Although they are iron-on’s I sewed along the edges just because I don’t like the look of the raw edge. Oh and I’d include buttons. Don’t you think I should include the buttons??

People have been asking what I’ve been making for this upcoming baby and truth be told, your looking at it. I’ve got zip, zilch, zero. We have no name picked out. I’ve hardly done any shopping. I just keep telling myself, ‘she just needs diapers and a few clothes!’ LOL. I’ve got 8 weeks to pull my head out. More on that later.

Oh and thanks for all the ‘curves’ advice… I think I know what I’m going to do now…more on that later, too. It’s getting too late for this lady : )

xoxo

    I love the cupcake!
I think that you should just sell the appliqués so that people can put them on whatever they choose,(a piece of clothing, a curtain, a pillow case, a tote bag,…). And yes, I think that you should include the buttons in the appliqué sets that you sell.
I know what you mean about getting ready for the little one. I didn’t have anything (but my generous sister’s hand-me-downs, a car seat and a stroller)until my shower, 3 days before Isaac was born.

Totally in agreement about just the iron ons. In a kit. With buttons. Totally awesome.
Oh, and we never have names for our babies. Just a list. Then we look at them for a day and see what we think. Oh, and we always have to shake on the deal so that it’s a contract, no one can change their mind!
I have every confidence you’ll get everything together perfectly!

I think you’re right, let the people iron at will. Some people have a shirt preference too so your idea will accommodate that.

I love the idea of just selling the appliques! My daughter is too big for onesis and this way I could have control over which color top to add one to.
Go for it! I love the designs you’ve chosen!

i LOVE this idea! i think it would better to sell just the appliques rather than you putting them on the onesies, etc. and selling them that way. either way, these are really cute and i’d love to get some for my little boy due in july!

i love the cupcake too! i just realized that the last commenter was my sis! i read it all and thought, she sounds a lot like alli! then i realized that it was alli!
i am really dumb when it comes to sewing and creating, but this might be easy enough for me. then again, i might just buy the appliques and never get around to putting them on anything. sigh.

great idea! maybe you could try both options (full kits and applique sets) for a whileto get a feel of which will sell better. Do it! Do it!

I love the idea of the kits – you’re right, it is so exciting to craft something, even if it’s just ironing on. :0) And, yes, I’d include the buttons!

I love the appliques sold alone. I would love to be able to purchase some to attach to shirts, skirts, bags, etc for my niece. She is too big for onesies. The cupcake is out of this world, and I would actually buy it to attach to a cupcake apron I am working on. You did a great job! Much success on the appliques!

I think you’re right; this would really set you apart from all the sellers of onesies. These would make a great gift for a new parent who loves to craft but can’t do anything that takes longer than 5 or 10 minutes because they have a small baby to take care of. Iron-ons are also a great way to cover a stain or small hole in a piece of kid’s clothing that is otherwise still sound — my mom used to cut simple shapes out of iron-on fabric to mend our clothes. I still remember getting to pick the shape I wanted! People could also use them on pillows, curtains, or other nursery decor as well as on adult clothes or clothes for older kids.
My only suggested change is, do you have to identify them as ‘girl’ and ‘boy’ patterns? My babies are girls, but I might pick the crab (which I’m guessing may be a boy pattern?) because I love marine critters. Is the deer for girls, because it’s a floral fabric, or for boys, because the antlers mean it’s a stag? I might buy it for something representing my whole family because my husband’s Hebrew name, Tzvi, means ‘deer’. Could you have a deal where people could get any six of their choosing? Someone could get 6 deer to line up on a nursery curtain, or mix and match the genders, or get two each of three patterns to make matching or symmetrical outfits… and even if most people did end up getting all ‘girl’ ones or all ‘boy’ ones most of the time, you’d have given them some options.

IDK! I love all the options, and definitely want some!!! Boy…girl…you offer it, I’ll take it. 🙂
sigh we’ve got no names here either. and the only thing I’ve gotten the babe is one of those cool dwell baby kimono onesies from target.
OK, I need your mailing info again. And this time I SWEAR I’m sending you a little something. (Last time I was so slow, poor henry out-grew it before I shipped it off. how dumb is that??)

LOVE the Cupcake & Crab!!! I think it would be nice if you sold them individually & then took off a certain amount for two or more. That way people could pick both boy & girl & still get the same price they would for a set. Your work is BEAUTIFUL!! Mrs.C

Definitely just sell the appliques…then people can answer their own “ethical dilemmas” on “organic”, “free trade”, and whatever else they choose to worry about. 😉

I think it is a great idea. You might want to give the option of several of the same pattern in one kit-for making a matching set of onesie, burb cloth, blanket, towel, etc, Go for it, the possibilities are many!

Sofia will get a ton of use out of it and its amazing. I say sell the kits and include buttons. Let me know when they are up cause I want to buy one! It was good seeing you today.

Awesome idea! I wouldn’t sell in a kit, I agree with your thinking. You can then use them for anything. Also, what about selling them in pairs? Adorable.

So cute! I’d go with selling just the applique, with buttons. As well as having a choice of where to apply it, people could put it on whatever size and color they prefer. If it is cost effective for you, I’d suggest smaller quantities. People may want just a couple to make a small gift.
As for making things for your baby…..you have already outdone me! I know whatever you make will be adorable. Your talent is so inspiring…….where do you find the time? 🙂

You are so clever. When Frankie was a baby (1987) the thing to do was to cross stitch on the little outfits. I love sewing what the ‘new thing’ is.

Morgan, I would totally buy a kit. I don’t have time to design things these days, but if I could knock something out in 20 minutes, like an iron-on and a little stitching? I’d be all over that.
