High School Art Projects

Img_9176My brother called to say that he was cleaning out his storage unit and came across a bunch of old high-school art projects of mine. He called to see if I wanted them. Eeek. I didn’t even know what he had and I honestly didn’t want any of them. So, when we met for New Years in St. George he brought them with him. We had a good laugh about the one I had drawn of Chris & I back when I was 16 or so (and an even greater laugh that Chris’ hair was twice the length of mine! ‘Which one is the girl??’) Back in high school, I was reading a lot of fashion magazines and loved Christy Turlington, although I think Linda Evangelista was one of my favorites. This one is done in pencil and I think I did it when I was 16 or so. That was 15 years ago. Gads! I used to do a lot of portraits- but I think the last one I did was 3 or 4 years ago.
Img_9180 I think I mentioned before on the blog, that I went through a major James Dean phase in High School. I actually think it started in Jr. High. James Dean was the subject of many, many art projects.  This one  was done with ink- not ink from a pen but you know that black ink that calligraphers use.. I can’t think of what is called. Clearly it’s been a long time since I’ve used it. Those are the words of a Yaz song scribbled in the background. (You must watch that awesome Yaz clip. Hilarious.) Now I’ve got a hankering for some Yaz and Alison Moyet (her solo stuff is so good.)

This one is done was done in…acrylic? oil? I can’t remember which. More James Dean. So funny.

And the last one- this was done with watercolor and more of that black inky stuff. I honestly don’t really remember doing this one- just vaguely.

Anyway- thanks for the trip down memory lane, Matt. These are being tossed today (I mean really, what on earth am I going to do with them??) So, go and paint something or use that stinky black inky stuff! LOL!

    Ei-yi-yi.
    I remember those days of peeking in your room and to see you sitting on your bed, music carrying your artistic energy thru waves of James, James, James and more James art. “He’s just so cute, Mom!”
    Too bad they have to go the way of the garbage. I hope James isn’t turning over in his grave.

    Ohmy don’t toss them. Think of how wonderful it would be to show them to the kids when grown. Love the first one especially. Seriously, later you’ll see some blogger with it on the wall where it was plucked from the trash.. comeon save it.

    Isn’t it funny when you come across things like this? While we were cleaning out our basement I found some sketches I did in high school. One was of Daffy Duck who looked paniced while a hand erased him (I wanted to be a cartoonist in the worst way) and another I did of Johnny Depp when I was a senior. I have to admit…they were both pretty dang good so I kept them. I might even frame the Johnny Depp one.
    And Yaz? Hello…I got an iTouch for Christmas so I used it to go to iTunes and I downloaded Upstairs At Eric’s. That was such a great CD. I’ve been listening to it non-stop lately!

    That 2nd James Dean one actually reminds me a bit of Chris too — maybe you had more on your mind than James that day! (Hubba, hubba). You should have posted the one you did of you and Chris! I’d love to see it!
    And speaking of “which one is the girl” — I always thought that was a man’s voice in that Yaz song! Too funny. That song is one of my all time favorites!

    Wow that really takes me back, I totally think of James Dean when I think of you. I don’t think that you should throw those out. But then I am a pack rat and I have saved a bunch of my stuff from High School. I really like to look at my Dad’s art that he saved and maybe my kids will like to see mine. But you are a much better artist than I ever was.
    So when you said a portrait of you and Chris. The Chris that popped into my mind was Chris Rawlings, I can’t believe that I even thought of him. I am totally clueless I didn’t know that you knew your husband Chris when you were 16. I think that you should post that portrait. Those were good times back at Timpview in the Art building. I had way too much fun skipping classes and playing in the darkroom printing pictures or painting.

    Don’t trash them. I know it’s hard to save things when you don’t have a lot of space. If you must get rid of them, photograph them first. Your children will be glad you did!

    Soooooo talented!! I love the top drawing… she’s beautiful. Are you talking about India Ink?? I also used to use Dr.____’s inks but I can’t remember the name on that one. How fast we forget.

    This comment may be too late, but don’t toss them! I agree with the idea of selling them on etsy…or even going to freecycle.org with them. Someone would adore these! (I love the JD with the song lyrics in the back.)

    speaking of yazoo, i just got this email from my friend dean:
    For the first time in more than 25 years, British dance duo Yazoo — known as Yaz in the United States — will reunite for a series of shows in the U.K. and U.S. this summer.
    The Reconnected tour kicks off June 4 at the Glasgow Clyde Auditorium in Scotland and continues for four more dates, finishing June 18 at London’s Hammersmith Apollo. U.S. dates are yet to be announced.
    Tickets for the European shows go on sale Friday (Jan. 25) through the band’s Web site, then go up for general sale Feb. 1.
    “In Your Room,” a four-disc collection of remasters, remixes, B-sides, a DVD and the band’s only two albums “Upstairs at Eric’s” and “You and Me Both,” is also set for release in May.
    Group members Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet parted ways in the summer of 1983, after the success of their singles “Only You” and “Don’t Go,” plus the U.K. chart-topper “You and Me Both.”
    Clarke has spent the rest of his career in Erasure; singer Moyet has released a number of solo albums, including last year’s “Turn.”
