Img_8546Our little Halloween party last Friday night was a hoot! I wish I took a picture of the night- but alas, I did not. Too busy playing with kids, eating food and having great visits with friends. I realized that I haven’t really posted any Halloween decorations of our place. We went kind of low key this year.

If you can believe it, we still have 2 bins of Halloween stuff that’s not making it’s way out. I just don’t have it in me. But what I’m liking: The crows. Simple, throw one on a  lamp or on a pumpkin, we’ve got 3-4 in our living room. I’m grooving on them.

I wanted to make something for the kids, as a little party gift that they could take home so I decided to make some bat & pumpkin bean bags. We played a little bean bag game and then they got to choose which one they wanted to take home.

I still haven’t made Henry’s costume yet, that’s gotta happen this week before Saturdays Trunk-or-Treat (no, Henry wasn’t even dressed up for his own Halloween party. I’m hoping he’s not scarred for life.) Anyway, this years costume has lots of green…any ideas?? Fleece: check. Felt: check. Green Tights: I’m in a bit of a panic trying to find these…anywhere I can get them in the greater LA area?

We made a pot of chili, and the recipe was such a cinch. I don’t have a lot of chili-making experience. It has always seemed too time consuming, the kind of thing that took all day to prepare. I found a great recipe on Allrecipes and made it for the first time a few weeks ago and had to make it again for our party. Here’s the recipe:

Chili

  • 2 pounds lean ground turkey or beef
  • 1 (46 fluid ounce) can tomato juice
  • 1 (29 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped celery
  • 1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper
  • 1/4 cup chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
  • 2 cups canned red beans, drained and rinsed

Directions:

  1. Place ground turkey/beef in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium-high heat
until evenly brown. Drain, crumble, and set aside.

  2. Add all ingredients to a large kettle. Bring to boil. Reduce heat and
simmer for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.

We topped ours with sour cream, diced onions & cheese.

Anyway, we had a great time and as soon as the last person left, Henry turned to me and said, "Let’s do it again!!!"

I’m sure you’ve been hearing about all the fires here. It’s just awful. I can’t imagine losing everything.
Henry’s been rubbing his eyes alot and I wonder if all the smoke in the
air is starting to affect him. The closest fires to us are in Malibu
and really, it’s not that far away- maybe 20 minutes. I’m not sure what to do for him, besides keeping him inside. Here’s to hoping that the fires start to die down soon!

Happy Wednesday!

p.s. HOLY CRAP- can you believe the Red Sox?? Well, yes I can. They are brilliant. Unbelievable. Bring on the Rockies!

You could dye white tights green, might be easier?

I got the banner I bought from your Etsy shop last week and hung it up in the doorway between our living room and kitchen. I get nothing but compliments on it when people come over! They all ask where I got it and I tell them.
I saw those crows (or something similar) at Pottery Barn Kids and thought they looked so cool. They look great in your house!
The Red Sox are on fire! It is nuts here in MA. Everyone is so happy and excited for the World Series!

Yep, go Sox! We were in Boston yesterday to take the kids to the Children’s Museum (SO much fun!) and everyone around was wearing their Red Sox gear. It was a happy town!
    Love the spooky house.

p.s. Hope those fires stay far, far away from you guys! Maybe tie a wet handkerchief around Henry’s nose and mouth (tell him he’s a bandit) when you go out?

So fun to be reading about your month — I was with you a year ago so I’ve been thinking of you (tower of terror!!!) Also was just in Boston for the week — just isn’t the same without you! Go BoSox!

How ’bout them BoSox?! So exciting, though it just isn’t the same not living there. I get excited but it was much more exciting when I could open my bathroom window and hear the crowd cheer. Or walk three blocks to watch the players go home after a great game in their fancy cars. Though I don’t miss being woken up at 1 am with hundreds of people on my street and hearing my car alarm going off and then coming downstairs to see the car in front of mine on fire. Oh, those were the days! Sorry I was just having a Boston moment. Morgs, I always think of you when Halloween comes around. You always had the best parties with the best soup and crafts! Love the bean bag idea, brilliant!

Sounds like a great recipe, perfect for Halloween! We had a fire about an hour away from us over the summer and my son was having problems with the smoke. We just kept him inside, especially when the ash started falling after a few days. That really bothered him.
I would dye white tights green, this is the worst time to try to find any colored tights. I was looking for brown and couldn’t even find those!

You blow me away with how creative you are! Arthur is having a birthday on Nov. 4 and he is very disappointed that he can’t have a outdoor run through the sprinklers party like Helen did. And I am not coming up with any ideas that he likes, do you have any good ideas for a 5 year old birthday party?

    Hey Morgan,
Check Shelly’s on Westwood between Olympic and Santa Monica for green tights. They are a dancewear and costume shop and have loads of tights! Here’s the address and phone number: 2089 Westwood Blvd. , West L.A., 310-475-1400.
Trick or Trunk at the Westwood building? Us too. : )

I love that your decorating is “low key.” I bought a bag of spider web stuff with black plastic spiders and still have yet to put it up! But I am determined to do it before Halloween!! At least I do have Libby’s costume made, but now I’m not sure we can even make it to trunk or treat. I don’t know about green tights, but I’m definitely looking forward to Henry’s costume! (Peter Pan??? I almost made Libby tinkerbell, but went with Cinderella instead after re-considering what it would be like to try to put her in a carseat with wings!)

Morgs, hearing you talk about the Sox reminds me of those days when you guys invited me over for Sunday games when I was abandoned by Mandy going to work. Oh the good ‘ol times.

If you can’t find green tights, just buy white ones and dye them green. I buy RITT powdered dye at the grocery store and it works well. It is hard to find unusual colored tights.
