IMG_4542Doesn't it feel good? It's warming up here in Southern California (well, it's always warm…but you know.) We hit the beach for the first time this year on St. Patrick's Day. Charlies' first time there and it was good. We stayed & watched the sun set. Anyway, the beginning of Spring always reminds me of when I used to work at Williams Sonoma  (about 10+ years ago) they used to simmer this amazing concoction on the stove and it made the whole store smell amazing. I feel like I've blogged about this before. Maybe I have or maybe I just thought about blogging about it but didn't. Regardless, I make this concoction every Spring and it makes the house smell like heaven.. IMG_4540You need a small stockpot filled about 2/3 full with water. 1 lemon, sliced, and a few sprigs of rosemary (on a cold dark night, armed with scissors, I did a little snippy snip of rosemary from the apartment bldg next door. Don't tell a soul!) IMG_4549Then add 1-2 tsp of vanilla:IMG_4554(can I get a HUZZAH for taking the picture while pouring the vanilla???)

I let it simmer all day long, adding water as needed. You can use the same mix for about 2 days; after that it gets a bit stanky if you know what I mean.) It's this wonderful scent of citrus with the warm vanilla and the rosemary…ack…the rosemary just ties it all in. Your home will smell mahvelous!

Here's to Spring!

We heat with wood and in the winter i always have a put of water with some sort of yummy concoction in it. I think I’ll try this fire the summer when the house is all closedup due to air conditioners running. Thanks for all the great ideas!

I always use cinnamon, cloves, allspice, nutmeg, ginger, orange, lemon, vanilla, in various combinations — each time different. What ever I feel like that day on how I want the house to smell like is what I put together. Sometimes all together. Main thing is boil it then let it simmer or you would be waiting for quite a while for aromas to fill house. I use to own a bed and breakfast.

Hmm. I tried this now, but maybe used too big of a pot/too much water as you can barely smell it more than 4 feet away from the stove.
Will try again with a smaller pot. 😦

White Stripe Cologne can be descented by using 2 cups of peroxide, 1 tbsp. dawn dish soap, and 1/4 cup of baking soda. Put all ingredients into a spray bottle shake and spray. May want to spray on a rag to wash the face and please do not let it get into your pets eyes or ears. You will still have a light stinch of skunk but not near as strong as before. My sister leaves the mix on her dog without rinsing. I tend to rinse after about 10 minutes. Oh and don’t forget the collar!

What an interesting array of comments and ideas – I read all of them from 2012 to 2014. Absolutely love the Spring Scent with lemon, rosemary & vanilla. I have such a thing about having the house smell nice. I’m sure many use the coffee grounds trick. Works very fast. Use a heaping tablespoon of fresh coffee grounds in small pot of water, bring to a quick boil and voila cooking smells gone in minutes.
I also use old coffee grounds to deoderize the fridge. Save about a cup full. Place in open container, back of fridge and hope no one spills it. Acts as a charcoal filter. Fay C. St. Albert Canada – way up north.

I thought I was so clever to get out my mini crock pot for this… But now I see from the comments that others have done it too. Thanks for the idea. I am always looking for natural ways to make the house smell yummy 🙂

I was just wondering, do you think if you added these scents to soy, you could make a candle out of it? I want to try it so bad, but I am nervous about how it will turn out!

cut a piece of old (clean) nylon stocking and stretch it over the container with a rubber band. The air will still flow very well and no spilled grounds.

I take a pint jar, partially fill it with water, add a slice of lemon, sprig of rosemary and a few drops of bergamot oil. Then I add a floating candle. Works great out on the deck keeping the bugs away. It smells lovely and looks so pretty.

I can’t even remember now how I stumbled onto your site! But … I’m so glad I did!! I can’t wait to try some of your scents. In the Fall I do use a small pot that I bought at a 2nd hand store and fill w/water, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice and the house smells divine. I’m really wanting to try the one with coconut flakes! I’m also going to try your Baking Soda w/essential oils. I love essential oils and I think I’m going to try the Pink Grapefruit first and make one for the bedroom with Lavender. You may know that essential oil of Peppermint is very rejuvenating – LOVE that one!! MY QUESTION; I’m new to sites such as this and I don’t see where I can sign up so I always see your site? Thank you – it’s been a pleasure and look forward to much more!
