IMG_4542Doesn't it feel good? It's warming up here in Southern California (well, it's always warm…but you know.) We hit the beach for the first time this year on St. Patrick's Day. Charlies' first time there and it was good. We stayed & watched the sun set. Anyway, the beginning of Spring always reminds me of when I used to work at Williams Sonoma  (about 10+ years ago) they used to simmer this amazing concoction on the stove and it made the whole store smell amazing. I feel like I've blogged about this before. Maybe I have or maybe I just thought about blogging about it but didn't. Regardless, I make this concoction every Spring and it makes the house smell like heaven.. IMG_4540You need a small stockpot filled about 2/3 full with water. 1 lemon, sliced, and a few sprigs of rosemary (on a cold dark night, armed with scissors, I did a little snippy snip of rosemary from the apartment bldg next door. Don't tell a soul!) IMG_4549Then add 1-2 tsp of vanilla:IMG_4554(can I get a HUZZAH for taking the picture while pouring the vanilla???)

I let it simmer all day long, adding water as needed. You can use the same mix for about 2 days; after that it gets a bit stanky if you know what I mean.) It's this wonderful scent of citrus with the warm vanilla and the rosemary…ack…the rosemary just ties it all in. Your home will smell mahvelous!

Here's to Spring!

Obsessed! I tried it with peppermint extract too (that’s all I had at the time) and that smelled awesome too – very fresh and clean. I ended up buying a rosemary tree from Trader Joe’s so I can keep my supply at the ready.

I’ve never tried the crock-pot method but I am sure it would probably work. I’ve only done it on the stovetop on simmer and continue to add water all day. Good luck!

I don’t know- the mixture only lasts about a day or 2 before it starts to get stanky…so I would probably say no…

If you distill this through cheesecloth you could use the infusion in a spray bottle. I’ll test it after I make it this weekend!

I have a question…are you using Vanilla extract or vanilla extract or Vanilla essential oil? I just want to make sure before I do this.

If you bring it to a rolling boil for 12 minutes, it should kill all bacteria. Just pour the solution in the spray bottle and add 1/2 cup of 91% rubbing alcohol. That will kill any left over “bugs” you might have in the water. That will also work as a “febreze” homemade solution.

This is AMAZING! I can’t say that I’ve been in a Williams Sonoma recently, so I can’t compare. I make my own household spray using vodka and I think I’m going to que off this and try Rosemary, vanilla and lemon essential oils for my spring and summer spray. I love the crisp, fresh smell. In following your recipe I put this in my cast iron kettle I use to scent my house. Superb!

Not certain I am reading the vanilla amount correctly. Is that 1 to 2 tsp of vanilla or 1/2 tsp vanilla?

Try turning a fan on nearby – I could only smell it by the stove, but once I put a fan on low by the stove, the fragrance spread throughout my house!

LOL I still knew exactly where mine was after all those years. I have a copper one and porcelain dark green one. The lids are what make it soooo easy with the holes in them for the scents and vapors to escape. Works perfectly for this amazing recipe!!! Love the step by step with pics info!

This was a WONDERFUL TIP! Thank you, thank you, thank you! For years I’ve used 1-3 small Potpourri pots with drops of essential oils in my home and at my business….Yesterday, I clipped a sprig of Rosemary from my Herb garden, added the Pure Vanilla Extract from my pantry, the water and several slices from the yellowest lemon I could find at Whole Foods….put everything in the Potpourri pot….. and OMG, as it heated up the aroma in my home was incredible-for hours!!!!! Much more affordable!

Don’t feel too bad about “stealing” rosemary from your neighbor (especially if it’s an apartment building)! I live in a condo where we have about 5 big rosemary bushes in our courtyard for decoration. The stuff grows fast if you don’t tend it, and there have been times between gardener visits when it gets quite overwhelming. I always snip some sprigs for use in my kitchen, and I’d welcome anyone else who wanted to do the same – saves on gardening work. And when the gardener does come, all he does is throw the clippings away. Might as well get some use out of the stuff instead ๐Ÿ™‚
