it’s not my bag, baby. I was way
over due for organizing my little fabric collection. I was not born
with the organizing gene. All 3 of my sisters were, though. Whenever
they come to visit and then leave, I magically find that all our DVD’s
have been arranged alphabetically and cupboards have food organized
into groups. How did I not get this gene? The food goes where I can
squeeze it in and then the cupboard gets quickly shut before anything
has a chance to fall out. Speaking of gene’s, they are all avid
worker-outers. They enjoy running. Who are these people?
Are we really related? I was born with the
"I’d rather have sand thrown in my eyes than run" gene. I take Henry
walking most days of the week, I can groove on step aerobics, I can do cardio,  … but running…gad’s..who wants to do that?
And I only do it out of the sheer fear of being one of those people who
has to be removed from their home by a crane. I know, I know, there are
oodles of you out there (not people who had to be removed by a crane,
runners). I just cannot comprehend… my mind is currently boggling.  I
digress. Organizing fabric…so many options. Do you organize by
color scheme? I have lots of polka-dot fabric..do all the polkies go
together? Do you organize by fabric type? Should all the linen fabric
go together?  This is what keeps me up at night. Not really. I don’t
care enough for it to keep me up at night, I have a 21-month old who
is an expert at that. It
seems like you have to pretty much make a complete mess of things
before there is any chance of things looking better. Am I right? So
that is what I tried to accomplish yesterday. It is still a work in
progress. I bought bleach for the first time I think in my entire
life. I wanted to bleach out some fabrics that were so bright, you got
a headache from looking at them. I was happy with how most of them
turned out. Some didn’t bleach at all, and a small handful got a little
too bleached. There was actually a clown print that was dangerously bright, but
now that it’s bleached, it’s the most wonderful pastel. It probably
would have been a good idea to wear some gloves or something. Note to
self: wear gloves next time. It was good to organize. I realized I have
a lot of blues & greens, reds & pinks, blacks & browns.
Almost no solids and really no yellow’s or oranges, or purples. But I
am okay with no purple.

I found this fabric, which I completely forgot I had. It’s so adorable
and I’m sure you’ve seen it before. Should I be alarmed that I now own
2 fabrics with the words "Butter" printed on them? Is this a sign? I think it’s hard to find really adorable childrens fabrics that I love and that everyone in the world doesn’t already have.  This fabric doesn’t really scream ‘Henry’ (he does not love breakfast) but I’m sure I’ll find some use for it.

Can I share
something that joined our family our few months ago? This armoire. It’s from Rachel Ashwells Shabby Chic line at Target, HOWEVER, one day while out thrifting when Mom was in town, I found this at Goodwill. It was still in it’s original box. It had been opened but taped shut. I crossed my fingers and hoped all the parts were there and well..the armoire was mine. For $39. It’s one of those "I’m starting to hyperventilate" moments. Where you don’t ask if it’s really only $39. Chris put it together that night and indeed, all the parts were there. There was the smallest of small nicks on the back, which is completely unnoticeable. It’s one of my very best thrifting finds. Half of the fabric has made it’s way in. The rest is in a pile on the floor waiting to be folded and put into it’s appropriate pile. That’s what I will be doing tomorrow. If my brain doesn’t explode by then.

Ditto on the running. Marc has tried to convince me to train for a marathon with him and my reply is, “Ummm… I’d rather eat tar”. No thank you. The fabric looks great and extra cute in your armoire!

Ohh that looks so interesting. I love all the fabrics. I know a lot of designers over dye or bleach their fabrics to get just the right colors.
I sort buy color, or sometimes if I have something in mind I plop it in as a project. Only my 30’s are seperate from everything else.

Nope….no running for this girl either. Seriously, I can think of, oh, about a GAZILLION other things I’d rather do. That’s just the way I roll. 🙂
Your fabric looks FAB all organized and prettified. Great job on the organization!! Impressive! I just got a big package of delish new prints in the mail today. While they DO look quite cute strewn across my cutting table (AKA our underused dining room table. DOH!) they are not NEAR as cute as yours set in that thrifted shabby armoire. What a STEAL!
BTW, did you ever get my email talking profusely about myself? (Ugh, I do that when I get excited. Terrible habit.) No pressure AT ALL for a response…Really!!…just making sure that it sent as I’ve had half-a-dozen, or so, people telling me they are not getting my mails from the past few days.
Best of luck with the remainder of your stash.

This post is cracking me up. I also despise running, I used to say I would only do it if someone bad was chasing me. Organizing is something I do like, or rather being organized is something I like but it’s hard with little ones even if you like it. That breakfast fabric is hysterical – ketchup and beans?

What a great thrift find! My thrift store in MI would receive Target returns. I got some bookcases and bedding which I was thrilled about. Now you have set a new standard!

Wow, you found that at Goodwill!? You lucky ducky. I really should stop by there more often, but I stopped going because Ryan told me I had to stop bringing home junk. “But what if I might use it someday!?”
Anyway, I’m also lacking the running and the organizing genes. Who runs for fun!? And organizing is for, well, organized people. Everytime I find a fabric organinizing system, I will start thinking about how the Denyse Schmidt fabrics are now separated, or the teals are clashing, so I find it’s just easier to leave it a mess!

ok, well, the non-runner genes came from me … sorry, real ladies don’t do things that make them sweat ….. but the organizing gene? The other 3 girls got that from me, you must have been in the “candy-love” line when it got passed out. I mean really, isn’t that the whole purpose of “stuff” …. so you can practice organizing?!?!? sheesh ….

LOVE LOVE LOVE the armoire. Where is it in your place? I need to be able to picture it in its spot to really appreciate it. We are about to embark on a 3-month organize and purge of our lives to get ready for our move. Wish me luck!

Oh, lovely! You might already know this but Target regularly sends thier open box, returns, and overstocks, to Goodwill(I am in NY, but I assume they do this everywhere). I’ve found quite a few nice things simply because they were out of the box.

the fabrics look SO YUMMY. i want to throw them up in the air and roll around on top of them. wait – then i’d have to help you organise them again…

$39 was a great deal. For some reason the Goodwills around here think “comes from Target” = charge 75% of the Target price. Sigh.
